SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Challenged for the first time under Major League Baseballs expanded replay system, umpires got it right. The umps went 3 for 3 on Monday as MLB tried out the new format at three spring training games. The first test came at 3:06 p.m. EST in Fort Myers, Fla., after first base umpire Fieldin Culbreth ruled Toronto shortstop Munenori Kawasakis throw pulled Jared Goedert off the bag in the sixth inning. "Im not too sure that youre not right here," Culbreth said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told him, "but since we havent done it before, lets go take a look." Culbreth answered: "OK. Thats what its for." After 2 minutes, 34 seconds, replay umpire Brian ONora relayed his call by headset, confirming that Minnesota batter Chris Rahl was safe. During the wait, Rahl said he realized he perhaps was part of history. "Its kind of funny. I was thinking, Is this the first one?" he said. ONora made the final ruling from a satellite truck outside the stadium. During the regular season, umpires on the field will check with the replay booth in New York, where an MLB umpire will make the final call. Later in the game, Culbreth rotated and took a turn in the truck, confirming another safe call at first base. "Im looking at this thing as, this is the future of the game. And Im going to treat these games here the same way that Im going to treat them during the regular season," Culbreth said. In the eighth inning, Doug Bernier of the Twins was called safe on a close play at first. As Culbreth studied the replay, the ballpark sound system played a Rolling Stones song with the familiar lyric, "I cant get no satisfaction." The call was confirmed, Bernier was safe. Extra replay also was in place for two games in Arizona -- the Los Angeles Angels vs. Arizona Diamondbacks in Scottsdale and the Chicago Cubs against Milwaukee in Phoenix. Each team in the majors will have at least five exhibition games with the new system in place. In January, owners approved the use of additional video replay to review most calls other than balls-and-strikes. Previously, umpires could only go to replay to review home runs and boundary calls. Moments after the first replay call, Angels manager Mike Scioscia wasted little time in using his challenge. In the top of the second, Luis Jimenez of the Angels tried to steal second. Catcher Bobby Wilsons throw was high but second base umpire Bill Miller ruled that Aaron Hill tagged the runner out. Scioscia bounded out of the dugout and charged toward Miller to argue, just like managers always have done. Instead, though, he chose to use his challenge. After two of the umpires made a quick visit to the Angels dugout to communicate with the replay umpire, the call was upheld. "We werent trying to make a mockery out of it," Scioscia said of using the challenge so soon. "We thought it was a pretty close play." There was only one angle available with the limited camera work of a spring training telecast. "If we have 15 angles of that," Scioscia said, "theres a possibility it gets reversed." That review took 2:31. Since he lost the challenge, Scioscia had no more. "I dont think its going to take much time in the logistics. That will smooth out," he said. "As far as the strategy of it, thats going to take a lot. It might be something you win, but you know you need that challenge to save the big play somewhere." Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and Arizonas Kirk Gibson did not use their challenge. Neither did Cubs manager Rick Renteria nor the Brewers Ron Roenicke. Gibson said he thought about contesting a close play when Paul Goldschmidt nearly beat out a grounder but said he decided it was 50-50 and not worth it. "I think its going to be a lot more complicated than we thought," Gibson said. "We had a lot of conversation during the game." For the Angels-Diamondbacks game, the replay trailer was set up in the parking lot behind centre field. Teams are allowed to have a person to watch the game on television and advise the managers via phone whether it would be worth it for the call to be challenged. The Angels communicated via walkie talkie Monday but there will be a dedicated phone line for each team in the major league parks. Under the new rules, each manager has one challenge. If the first challenge is successful, the manager gets a second. From the seventh inning on, if the manager is out of challenges, the umpire can decide to have the play reviewed. Some critics of expanded replay worried that challenges would delay the game too much. Culbreth said he didnt think that would be a problem, and pointed at the benefits. "It will work itself out. I think time really isnt going to be an issue in the end," he said. "And if it is, its about getting the play right in the end, anyhow." That is about it. Ross Brawn has confirmed hess held talks with Liberty Media, but wouldnt confirm whether hell be working with them in the future When Libertys takeover of F1 was announced in September, the American firm said Ecclestone would remain as CEO, with the 86-year-old separately telling media he had been asked to stay on for three years.ddddddddddddBrawn has told Sky Sports News HQ he would certainly be attracted to a full-time role helping shape F1s future under its new owners, having already done some consultancy work for them. However, he denied he has already signed up.The F1 Gossip ColumnPrimarily I was approached by Liberty Media to give them an overview of Formula 1 from my perspective so Ive done some consultancy but thats really the extent of it so far, Brawn told SSNHQ.Im just helping them understand how Formula 1 works, how the teams work, the perspective of a team. Obviously theyve got a relationship with CVC, but they wanted to understand how the team works, views on how F1 can change in the future. Speaking to Autosport, Ecclestone denied suggestions Brawn had already signed a deal to directly replace him, adding that the former Ferrari technical director would instead be absolutely first class in a rule-making role at the FIA, F1s governing body.It has been widely speculated that Brawn could feature as a dream team partnership overseeing the sport alongside marketing guru Zak Brown. Newton initially eluded some Saints

Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - New Orleans followed up Sunday nights drubbing of Green Bay with another impressive showing. Except this one came on the road. And it put the Saints on top of the so-so NFC South. Mark Ingram ran for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns and New Orleans defeated the Carolina Panthers 28-10 on Thursday night. The Saints broke a scoreless deadlock by scoring on three straight possessions in between the second and third quarters to build a 21-7 advantage and cruised the rest of the way en route to ending their seven-game, regular-season road losing streak. Following a career-high 172 rush yards Sunday, Ingram topped the 100-yard mark again after tallying just one 100-yard rushing performance prior in his first 40 games. Drew Brees was 24-of-34 for 297 yards with a touchdown and an interception and added a rushing score for the Saints (4-4), who have bounced back from a 1-3 start by winning three of their last four contests. Jimmy Graham caught seven passes for 83 yards and a score, while Kenny Stills added five receptions for 72 yards in the triumph. Junior Galette recorded two of New Orleans four sacks and its defense held Cam Newton to just 151 yards passing with an interception on just 10-of-28 efficiency. Newton carried the ball seven times for 43 yards and a touchdown for Carolina (3-5-1), which accumulated just 231 total yards. The Panthers are 1-5-1 since a 2-0 start. The first of the Saints three straight scores came at the 2:38 mark of the second quarter. Newton initially eluded some Saints pressure by moving to his right, but didnt see a converging Galette from behind as he strip-sacked him at the Carolina 4. New Orleans linebacker Curtis Lofton recovered the loose ball and Ingram followed the pulling left guard Ben Grubbs off the right side for a 3-yard TD run two snaps later. The Saints defense then forced a three-and-out and briskly traveled 85 yards in 10 plays to put another touchdown on the board right before the half. Brees hit Stills for a 17-yard completion on a 3rd-and-10 and Carolina cornerback Antoine Cason committed a pass interference on Robert Meachem in the end zone on a 3rd-and-17 from the Carolina 33. Brees then flipped a back-shoulder throw to Graham isolated in coverage in the back right corner of the end zone with three ticks to go in the half. Carolina picked up 70 yards of offense on its initial march of the third, nearly matching its first half total of 89. DeAngelo Williams took a screen pass for 30 yards on the opening play and Newton finished off the sequence with a 10-yard TD run. On the highlight-reel score, Newton spun to his left to escape from cornerback Patrick Robinsons blitz off the edge and ran away from Galette along the left sideline before diving inside the 5 and reaching the ball out inside the left pylon. The Saints answered with an elongated 6:10, 14-play, 80-yard series. Brees found Brandin Cooks for a 15-yard completion on an initial 3rd-and-9, hit Stills to pick up 12 on a 3rd-and-7 and snuck it in on fourth down to complete the drive late in the third. Graham Gano nailed a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth to get Carolina within 21-10, but the Saints drained the ensuing 7:27 off the clock prior to Ingram darting through for the back-breaking 3-yard score with 5:30 left. New Orleans turned the ball over on its first two touches, each while in Carolina territory. Panthers defensive tackle Dwan Edwards hauled in a deflected pass while the Saints were driving inside the red zone on their first sequence, and Mario Addison recovered a Brees fumble following Charles Johnsons strip-sack on their second. Carolina, though, couldnt capitalize despite driving into Saints territory on each of its first three series. Saints cornerback Corey White picked off Newton to end the Panthers third drive after Brenton Bersin dropped a pass over the middle early in the second. Game Notes Ingram became the first Saints back to run for over 100 yards in consecutive games since Deuce McAllister from Dec. 3-10 of the 2006 season ... New Orleans began the season 0-4 away from home ... The Saints had 375 total yards ... New Orleans was 7-of-13 on third down, while the Panthers finished 6-of-14. Caleb Sturgis Jersey . Miller originally was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team by the Nuggets for verbally confronting coach Brian Shaw in the waning minutes of their 114-102 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night in full view of teammates and fans. It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Nuggets. Miller reportedly was upset over what became the first "did not play-coachs decision" of his 15-year career. In a brief statement released Friday, Nuggets general manager Tim Connelly said that Miller would rejoin the team on Monday. He also said that until then, Miller would be excused from all team activities for personal reasons. Prior to Friday nights game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Shaw said that the club decided it was best to lift the suspension but maintain a sort of cooling off period. "Itts a personal matter and what we wanted to happen was him basically be away from the team for a few days," Shaw said.dddddddddddd "The crux of it is the incident that took place, everybody understands that cant happen, and because of that, hell get time to attend to some personal matters." Shaw said he has not had any contact with Miller since the episode, but indicated too much had been made about the issue. "Really, I thought the whole thing was blown out of proportion," Shaw said. "In the heat of the moment, sometimes players say things to coaches, sometimes coaches say things to players. What we try to get to happen is have it happen in the locker room, behind closed doors, within the group. "It started out on the court and thats what brought attention to it. its appreciation to Tom for his many

Aston Villa have announced that chief executive Tom Fox has decided to step down with immediate effect. The American is blamed by many fans for Villas poor performance in the transfer market. He is the second high-profile departure from the club this week. Sporting director Hendrik Almstadt left on Tuesday after under a year in the role. Chairman Steve Hollis told the clubs website: The Board would like to place on record its appreciation to Tom for his many contributions and commitment over the last 18 months. Remi Gardes men are still bottom of the Premier League While the results this season have been disappointing he and his team have worked hard to put in place many changes necessary to put the club on a more sustainable path for the future. He leaves with our best wishes for the future.Fox joined the club in August 2014 after spending five years as Arsenals chief commercial officer. Fox said: Joining Aston Villa was a huge privilege for me and while Im bitterly disappointed by results this season, watching the club compete at Wembley in the FA Cup final last year is a memory Ill cherish.Im appreciative to the Board and the owner for the opportunity to help put Villa back on a solid footing and able to compete in the most competitive sports league in the world. Aston Villa is a proud and storied club which deserves to be among the elite in Europe and I have every confidence that it will once again find its way back.Regarding my resignation, the owner made it very clear last summer that he and I would seek to recruit a Board that would put the club in a stronger position in the event that a sale didnt happen. As the Board has taken shape, however, it has become clear that my role also has changed. While I am supportive of where the Board is trying to take the club, it is my feeling that given the changes they are making, it makes sense for me to seek another challenge. The veteran quarterback has a completion average approaching 90 per cent over his last three starts and is a big reason why Toronto is the CFLs hottest team. Thats not exactly good news for an injury-plagued Calgary Stampeders squad that will face the Argonauts at Rogers Centre tonight. Watch the game live NOW on TSN and TSN Mobile TV, beginning with the pre-game show. You can also listen to the game live NOW on TSN Radio Toronto 1050. Ray, 33, has completed 64-of-73 passes his last three starts for 851 yards and eight touchdowns. He finished 30-of-35 passing for 413 yards and three TDs in Torontos 36-33 home win over Edmonton on Sunday and is second overall in passing with 1,768 yards with 14 TDs and no interceptions. And the 11-year veteran, whos in his second season with Toronto, says he can feel hes in the groove. "Yeah, just because things are going well and were making a lot of plays," he said. "We had a couple of games early on in the year where things were a little bit tougher to come by and we werent making as many plays so definitely you feel like youre doing a lot of good things out there." This season, Ray has completed 143-of-183 passes, a 78.1 per cent clip. Calgary offensive co-ordinator Dave Dickenson holds the single-season record of 74 per cent set in 05 with B.C. Dickenson also set the CFL passer-efficiency record of 118.8 that season but Rays boasts a mark of 133.0 thus far. Toronto (5-2) heads into a rematch of last years Grey Cup having won four straight. "I dont think it slows down, I think in a sense Im just able to make quicker decisions," Ray said. "Im just seeing things good right now and am able to get the ball out of my hands without second-guessing or holding on to the ball. "Thats when I feel like Im playing good when Im just back there making quick decisions and letting it come out of my hands." That actually started late last season after Ray missed three games with a knee injury. Toronto lost 44-32 to Winnipeg in Rays return but ended its campaign with five straight wins, including a 35-22 decision over Calgary in the 100th Grey Cup at Rogers Centre. "I think it started towards the end of last year but I think its carried over and hes maybe taken it a step higher so far this year," Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said. "Ricky seems to be on the same page with the new receivers, particularly John (Chiles), and picked up where he left off with the other guys and Jason Barnes has kind of started hot like he finished last year. "I think the combination of all those things has contributed to Rickys numbers and play." Ray has also received solid protection up front as Torontos offensive line has allowed a league-low 12 sacks, one less than second-place Calgary..dddddddddddd "We watched games from early last year, even Week 2 when we played Calgary, and you can see the difference in his feet," Milanovich said. "A quarterbacks accuracy, in my opinion, is all based on his footwork and body position. "He was getting hit at that time last year and just wasnt as comfortable in the pocket and that can affect your accuracy. This year weve been protecting him much better." Calgary (5-2) wont be at full strength Friday night. Veteran slotback Nik Lewis, a perennial 1,000-yard receiver, is out after suffering a fractured fibula in last weeks 26-22 loss to B.C. Receiver Maurice Price (ankle), offensive lineman Dimitri Tsoumpas (concussion) and running back Jon Cornish (thigh contusion) also wont play. The loss of Cornish — last years CFL rushing leader whos second this year with 749 yards — is huge. Among the Stampeders on the nine-game injured list are receivers Johnny Forzani, Joe West and Chris Bouman, offensive lineman Edwin Harrison and defensive linemen Etienne Legare and Corey Mace. "Chris (Argos defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones) will still have to stop the run against Calgary, whether Jon plays or not," Milanovich said. "Thats been their MO and what they like to hang their hat on. "But after a week like we had last week youve also got to expect them to test our secondary. I still believe any defence has to stop the run first and make a team one dimensional." Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly completed 35-of-46 passes Sunday for 511 yards and three TDs. With just four returning starters, the Argos defence has struggled to establish consistency. But while Toronto is ranked last in yards allowed (416 per game), its third in fewest points surrendered (24.9 per game). "Right now, honestly, I think its similar to the way we were offensively last year," Milanovich said. "I think what Chris is going through right now is just figuring out exactly where we want to have guys playing and what they do best. "It takes time. Once you start to get good at something teams adjust. Its just a constant kind of thing during the season where you have to keep moving and keep changing what you do . . . I have a lot of confidence in where our defence is going." Calgarys defence — which features former Argos defensive lineman Kevin Huntley — is allowing the second-fewest yards per game (322.7) and is fourth in points allowed (26.6). Torontos offence is second overall in scoring (32.9 points per game) and tops in passing (325.9 yards). "They do a lot of things to keep you off balance," Ray said. "They dont let you scheme things up against them and let you beat them with scheme. "They keep you off balance and keep you guessing on what plays you need to call." DENVER -- Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov can remain free on bond while facing a domestic violence charge involving his girlfriend, a judge said Monday. Varlamov appeared in court for a brief hearing as the judge formally advised him that he faces a misdemeanour charge of third-degree assault. He is scheduled to enter a plea at his next hearing on Jan. 22. Most misdemeanour cases in Denver are settled with plea bargains, but a spokeswoman for the District Attorneys Office declined to say whether an agreement was likely in this case. Neither Varlamov nor his attorneys commented when they left court Monday. Varlamovs girlfriend, Evgeniya Vavrinyukat, told police he knocked her down with a kick, stomped on her chest and dragged her by her hair at their apartment on Oct. 30, according to an arrest affidavit. She also accused him of telling her that he would have beaten her more if they had been in Russia, authorities said. Varlamov could face a sentence ranging from probation to two years in jail if convicted of the assault charge. He wore a blue suit and open-collar white shirt in court Monday and gave yes or no answers to the judge. Varlamov, 25, is one of NHLs hottest goalies and has helped the Avalanche to a franchise-best 19-6 start. He is free on $5,000 bond and has been travelling and playing with the team. The judge has ordered him to stay away from his girlfriend and told him he could not drink alcohol or possess firearms. Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys . LOS ANGELES -- Jonathan Quicks Olympic goaltending audition for U.S. national team coach Dan Bylsma ended after three Pittsburgh goals in one rocky period. All that proves to Bylsma is that his Penguins are awfully good. Jussi Jokinen had a goal and two assists in the first period, Evgeni Malkin scored in the opening minute, and Pittsburgh chased Quick early in a 4-1 victory over the struggling Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night. Chris Kunitz and Tanner Glass both scored in their second straight game for the Penguins, who opened a two-game West Coast road trip with the franchises first regulation victory at Staples Center. Former Kings farmhand Jeff Zatkoff made 30 saves in the Eastern Conference leaders fourth win in five games. Quick didnt exactly make a stellar argument to Bylsma for the starting job in Sochi, giving up three goals on the Penguins first five shots before Martin Jones replaced him for the final two periods. Quick is competing with Detroits Jimmy Howard and Buffalos Ryan Miller, who was beaten 3-0 by the Penguins on Monday. "Its one game I get to see live, but ... Ive seen a lot of him," Bylsma said of Quick. "Its not a good outing for him, but hes got a body of work thats more than just this game." Quick was hurt by the NHLs best power play: Kunitz scored his career-high 27th goal on a two-man advantage, and Jokinen added his 16th moments later. Quick has started 13 of the Kings 14 games since returning from a 24-game injury absence. "If you give any team a 5-on-3, theyre going to create chances," Quick said. "They get one there, and then they get a 2-on-1 where they beat me over the shoulder. At that point, were not out of the game. We just couldnt get it together enough to get a couple (of goals)." Jokinen, a Finnish Olympian, had been in a three-game scoring drought in an otherwise stellar season. He credited this outburst to his mothers rare chance to see him play live: Most of the Penguins mothers are travelling with the club on this short trip. "I had a good first period, so I probably have to fly my mother here more than once a year," Jokinen said. Anze Kopitar scored his third goal in five games for the Kings, but those are the only goals scored in the last nine days by the Kings, who have lost seven of eight. The Kings had played their last eight games away from Staples Center, including last weekends "home" game at Dodger Stadium. Theyve got a four-game homestand heading into the Olympic break, but still havent solved their scoring woes. "They are a high-powered team," Los Angeles defenceman Matt Greene said. "Its tough to come back when you arent scoring a lot of goals, and when you give up two on the penalty kill. Its tough chasing in a game against a team like this." The Staples Center crowd gave a reasonably warm welcome to Pittsburgh defenceman Rob Scuderi, who anchored the Kings defence during their Stanley Cup championship run in 2012 before leaving Los Angeles as a free agent last summer. But the high-scoring Penguins decisively won their matchup against the NHLs best defensive team, and they did it early. Just 53 seconds in, Jokinen made a spectacular no-look pass across the crowded crease to Malkin for his 15th goal. Kopitar evened it with a rocket of a shot from the faceoff circle midway through the period for the 16th goal by Slovenias only NHL Olympian. After Jarret Stoll and Dustin Brown were hit with penalties at the same time, Kunitz scored in front of Quick after tic-tac-toe passing from Jokinen and Sidney Crosby. Jokinen put the Penguins up 3-1 just 57 seconds later, ripping a one-timer past Quicks glove. Glass beat Jones with a sharp-angled backhand late in the second period for his fourth goal. "We were confident all along," Glass said. "We had a great start. Our power play was awesome, and then we were stingy when we had to be." . Theyve lost four of five at the United Cente

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Perry netted his NHL-leading 11th goal of the season and the Anaheim Ducks held off the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Sunday night. Colorado led 2-1 heading into the second period, when Cam Fowler and Hampus Lindholm notched goals. Jason LaBarbera stopped five of his 16 shots in the third to preserve the win for Anaheim, which has won three of its last four games. LaBarbera, recalled from AHL Norfolk earlier in the day, started in net for the Ducks after a sudden lower-body injury to John Gibson during warmups left them in a pickle. I jumped on the plane just expecting to back up tonight. I guess its better not to have to think about it, LaBarbera said. I have not played a game in the NHL in over a year, so this was great. Because their other goaltender, Frederik Andersen, is day-to-day with a leg injury, the Ducks turned to goaltending consultant Dwayne Roloson as their backup in an emergency substitution allowed under NHL rules. Roloson, 45, played 14 NHL seasons for six different teams, last taking the ice for Tampa Bay during the 2011-12 season. Ryan Getzlaff dished out two assists in the triumph. Nathan MacKinnon and Dennis Everberg tallied for the Avalanche, who have dropped four of their last five games. Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves in defeat. We were just not sustaining any pressure, Colorado center John Mitchell said. The Ducks went ahead in the second after outshooting Colorado 12-2. Patrick Maroon sent a pass from behind the net into the slot for Lindholm, who wristed it home to tie the game at 6:04. Less than two minutes later, Fowlers backhander put the Ducks in front. Everberg and MacKinnon sandwiched their goals around Perrys marker. Everberg opened the scoring with a sharp angle wrister from the left side that got past LaBarbera just 2:18 into the game. Perrys goal came when he drove to the net and ripped a shot that ricocheted off Varlamov, bounced off Perry and went into the net. MacKinnons wrister from the right circle with less than a minute left gave Colorado its 2-1 advantage. Game Notes Varlamov played in his third game in four nights and has now faced 73 short- handed shots without allowing a goal ... Everberg posted his first career point ... Lindholm scored for the first time in 20 games. Garrett Grayson Jersey . JOHNS, N.CHICAGO -- Taj Gibson led five players in double figures with 23 points and the Chicago Bulls brushed off a poor offensive first half to rally for an 89-77 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Kirk Hinrich had 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, Mike Dunleavy scored 13, Jimmy Butler 12 and Joakim Noah added 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Gibson, who was 9 for 15 from the field, also had eight rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench. The Bulls (40-31) pulled within two percentage points of Toronto (39-30) for third place in the Eastern Conference. The win also prevented Indiana from clinching the Central Division title on Chicagos home court. The Pacers are looking to win consecutive division crowns for the second time since joining the NBA (1998-99 and 1999-2000). The Pacers, who were led by Paul Georges 21 points, have dropped three straight and six of eight on the road. Theyve lost four of five at the United Center, including both visits this season. The Pacers earned a 91-79 victory over the Bulls on Friday night at Indiana. With the NBAs top two defensive teams on the court, points figured to come at a premium, and that certainly was the case in the first half. Neither team managed to score 20 in either of the first two quarters, and the Pacers took a 34-33 halftime lead when George Hill (12 first-half points) hit a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left. The Bulls were 14 of 44 (31.8 per cent) from the field in the first half, including 1 for 10 on 3-pointers. Perhaps the most entertaining portion of the half came when the crowd got on Pacers centre Roy Hibbert for an apparent flop, a hot topic between the teams in recent days. On the play, Hibbert was fouled by Noah as he was beginning to go up for a shot attempt. While there definitely was enough contact to warrant a foul, it appeared to be light. Hibbert, though, dropped to the court flailing as if he had been hit by a flagrant foul. After the replay was shown on the scoreboard, the crowd began too boo.dddddddddddd Noah stood off to the side with a big grin on his face. Following Fridays game in Indiana, Gibson accused the Pacers of flopping, and it was still the topic of conversation at the morning shootaround for both teams. "I mean, I havent taken a charge in probably four years," Hibbert said at the shootaround. "Hes entitled to his opinion. Im just going to go out there and play hard." The Bulls finally got into an offensive rhythm in the third quarter, starting the second half with a 16-5 run to take a 49-39 lead. A few minutes later, Indiana had cut the lead to 55-49 and George had the ball on a fast break ahead of the field. Hinrich, though, caught him from behind and looked as if he was going to give an intentional foul. Instead, Hinrich stripped the ball and the Bulls headed in the opposite direction as George complained that he was fouled. The Bulls completed the four-point swing on Gibsons dunk to make it 57-49 with just more than 4 minutes left in the third quarter. The Bulls took a 64-56 lead into the fourth after scoring 31 points in the third. They had balanced scoring in the quarter with Dunleavy and Hinrich each tallying seven points. Carlos Boozer, Butler and Gibson added five apiece. The Bulls were never seriously threatened in the fourth and held on for a relatively comfortable win. NOTES: The Bulls posted a 110-94 victory in Indianas only previous visit to the United Center this season on Nov.16. Indiana won both games at home as the teams split the season series. ... Pacers coach Frank Vogel when asked if Hibbert was the NBA Defensive Player of the Year: "Hands down. Hes the best rim-protector on the best defence in the league. I think thats who the award should go to. Ill be very disappointed if he doesnt get the award this year." NEW YORK -- It was a great night for the greybeards at Citi Field. Bobby Abreu went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Bartolo Colon pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning as the New York Mets turned to a pair of 40-somethings to beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Friday night. "Representing the 40s. When we go to the field, we throw everything that weve got," Abreu said. "Been playing this game for a long time, so pretty much we know what we have to do." Abreu scored twice in the rain-delayed opener of a three-game series between fourth-place teams struggling to score. Colon (6-5) set down 18 straight batters and improved to 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last five starts, sending the Mets to only their second victory in 10 games. "We needed to have him get deep in the game. It was important for us because we were so short in the pen," manager Terry Collins said. Rene Rivera hit a two-run homer but Andrew Cashner (2-6) failed to hold a rare lead for the Padres, who have dropped five straight and nine of 11. The hard-throwing Cashner, who entered with a 2.13 ERA, has lost five straight decisions. He gave up four runs and eight hits over six innings in his second start since spending more than three weeks on the disabled list with a sore right elbow. Fans were advised to take cover on the concourse during the rain delay because of dangerous weather. Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals between the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings was shown on the big video screen in centre field for most of a delay at the start that lasted 1 hour, 56 minutes. And even after the ballgame began, some in the sparse crowd announced at 28,085 seemed to be paying much more attention to hockey. With the Rangers trying to stave off elimination again, an audible groan went up in the seventh inning -- just as New York defenceman Ryan McDonagh hit the post with a shot in overtime. After the final out, some fans lingered near TVs inside the ballpark to keep watching. In the end, the Rangers lost in double overtime. The 41-year-old Colon had uncharacteristic trouble with his command at the start. He walked his first batter and gave up Yonder Alonsos leadoff single in the second before Rivera connected for his fourth home run. "I got a little mad. I was meaning to throw that pitch outside and I just went in a little too much so that really got me fired up," Colon said through a translator. "I think it was just a matter of getting through the first two innings. After that I got really comfortable, found my zone and kept going from there." The home run gave Cashner an uncommon 2-0 lead -- the Padres had scored only once in his previous 33 innings. Colon, however, quickly regrouped and retired his next 18 batters until Alexi Amarista opened the eighth with a double. "Ive known Bart for a long time and at times, youll see him get stronger as the game goes on. I think you saw that tonight," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He held his velocity throughout the game, even into the eighth inning." After throwing a called third strike past pinch-hitter Tommy Medica with his 118th pitch, Colon was lifted. He walked off the mound to a warm hand and softly clapped his hands. Vic Black retired cleanup man Carlos Quentin with the bases loaded to end the inning. Batting fourth in place of Curtis Granderson (calf), the 40-year-old Abreu hit a leadoff double in the second and scored on Taylor Teagardens two-out single. "Anytime they need me there, Im always going to be ready to play the game," Abreu said. He singled in the fourth and Lucas Duda tied it 2-all on a two-out double just beyond the reach of diving centre fielder Will Venable. Matt den Dekker blooped a ground-rule double that put New York ahead. "Couldnt stop the two-out hits," Cashner said. Abreu added RBI singles in the fifth and seventh. Slumping star David Wright had a long sacrifice fly in the seventh. It was the first four-hit game for Abreu, who did not play in the majors last season, since May 30, 2011, with the Angels at Kansas City. "I made two good pitches to him," Cashner said. "Hes a good hitter, a professional hitter. Couldnt get him out." NOTES: Padres RHP Jesse Hahn will be recalled from Double-A San Antonio to make his second major league start Saturday. Hahn was a high school teammate of injured Mets ace Matt Harvey in Groton, Connecticut, about a 2-hour drive from Citi Field, and expects to have family and friends in the stands. ... Granderson was out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive night and might sit out again Saturday, Collins said. ... Mets LF Eric Young Jr. (strained right hamstring) had his rehab assignment moved to Double-A Binghamton, and the team hopes hell be ready to return at the end of the weekend. ... Mets closer Jenrry Mejia (stiff back) had an MRI and was given medication. "They said itll probably be a day or so before hes going to be available," Collins said. Shareef Abdur-Rahim Jersey . PHOENIX -- Chase Anderson is the first Arizona pitcher to win his first three career starts. And the Diamondbacks offence has made it a lot easier for him. Arizona set a first-inning franchise scoring record on Wednesday night en route to a 12-6 victory over the San Diego Padres. The Diamondbacks scored 18 runs for him in his previous start. "Golly, I mean, shoot," Anderson said. "What was it 18 runs the last time when we played against the Dodgers, 12 today? Thats a pitchers dream right there." Rookie Tommy Medica fell a single shy of becoming the first Padre to hit for the cycle and would have had it had his screaming line drive dropped by third baseman Martin Prado not been ruled an error in the second inning. Medica said it "definitely" could have been ruled a hit. "Prado is great player," he said. "I dont know if they are thinking it might be routine for him." Prado and Paul Goldschmidt both hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for Arizona. Diamondbacks rookie Chris Owings had his first big-league four-hit game. Goldschmidts homer travelled an estimated 470 feet, the farthest he can remember hitting one. Arizona, taking two of three from the Padres, scored eight runs and eight hits in the first, chasing starter Tim Stauffer (2-1) after just one-third of an inning. Anderson (3-0) got big support for the second straight outing. The Diamondbacks scored 18 runs for him in his previous start. Medica tripled in the third, doubled in fifth and homered in the eighth -- one night after getting three hits, including a two-run homer, in the Padres 4-3 win. He had a final chance for that single in the ninth but flied out to centre. Anderson allowed four runs, just one earned, and eight hits in five innings to help Arizona win its second straight home series after losing its first seven. A.J. Pollock doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs in the Diamondbacks 17-hit effort. Arizona sent five batters to the plate in the opening inning before the first out. Pollock and Gerardo Parra opened the game with singles, then Goldschmidt doubled home Pollock. Miguel Montero walked to load the bases and Prado singled in a run. "Baseball at times is a very cruel game," Padres manager Bud Blackk said. "Pollocks was just a bounding groundball that was hit in the right spot. Parra, a bounding ball hit in the right spot and not hit hard. Goldschmidt just a blooper down the right field line. Not hit hard. You look up and it is guys on second and third and one run in and they havent hit the ball hard." Aaron Hill struck out -- the only out for Stauffer who was making his second start after moving from the bullpen. Owings singled in a run, then Ender Inciarte singled in two more and it was 5-0 with two runners on base when Donn Roach replaced Stauffer. Pollock promptly doubled home both runners, then Arizona wrapped up the eight-run frame with Parras RBI double. In the Arizona second, Montero singled, then Prado smashed a line drive two-run shot into the Diamondbacks bullpen down the left field line, his second home run in as many games, and it was 10-0. Medica led off the fourth with a triple then scored on Jedd Gyorkos groundout. San Diego scored three unearned runs in the fifth. Everth Cabrera singled, then with the shift on for Seth Smith, Prado dropped a grounder to the right of second base, his second error of the game. Yonder Alonso singled in a run, then Medicas two-run double cut it to 10-4. Pollock opened the seventh with a double, then scored on Goldschmidts soaring home run to centre off Troy Patton to make it 12-4. The first-inning outburst was well off a franchise record for a San Diego opponent. The Padres gave up 11 runs in the first to St. Louis in 2005. NOTES: Arizona manager Kirk Gibson turned 57 on Wednesday. ...The Padres announced that RHP Ronald Herrera is the player to be named in the deal that sent Kyle Banks to Oakland. ... The Diamondbacks called up Nick Evans from Triple-A Reno and optioned OF Alfredo Marte to Reno. Evans replaced Goldschmidt at first base in the eighth. ... The Padres have Thursday off and open a three-game series in Chicago against the White Sox on Friday ... Sua Cravens Jersey .com) - The Columbus Blue Jackets rewarded starting goaltender and pending restricted free agent Sergei Bobrovsky with a four-year contract extension on Friday.NORMAN, Okla. -- Blake Bell knew he would likely have to match Texas Techs high-powered offence with big plays of his own if Oklahoma was to knock the Red Raiders from the ranks of the unbeaten. The Sooners quarterback did just that in a 38-30 victory Saturday, providing one of several spectacular moments for No. 17 Oklahoma as it reasserted its position as one of the Big 12 Conferences best. Bell accounted for 293 yards of total offence for the Sooners (7-1, 4-1), throwing for 249 yards and two touchdowns in handing the 10th-ranked Red Raiders (7-1, 4-1) their first loss of the season. None of Bells plays were bigger than his 76-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Saunders in the first half, a play that put Oklahoma up 14-7 and gave it a much-needed boost of momentum after offensive struggles in recent weeks. "You need to get some chunks," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "It (was a) spark to get some big plays, and to get a chunk like that is a huge play in the game. It was a great throw by Blake and a great job by Jalen running it down and making the play." Saunders finished with six catches for 153 yards and Damien Williams rushed for 97 yards and two touchdown for the Sooners, who forced three turnovers. The Red Raiders entered the game riding a wave of momentum under first-year coach Kliff Kingsbury, and they were eager to prove they were worthy of their lofty ranking -- despite just one win over a ranked team this season entering the game. The three turnovers, however, came back to haunt Texas Tech. "You cannot come into this stadium against this team with those coaches and those athletes and do that," Kingsbury said. "... We knew coming in that we couldnt have the turnovers, but we didnt take care of business." Davis Webb finished 33-of-52 passing for 385 yards for the Red Raiders, who were led by Jace Amaros 119 yards receiving on eight catches. Eric Ward added nine catches for 106 yards. Texas Tech led 7-0 after the first quarter and the offensive shootout was on between two of the Big 12s best -- the defending conference champion Sooners and upstart Red Raiders. The teams combined for 986 yards of total offence, with Oklahoma outgaining Texas Tech 526-460. After watching the Red Raiders rally from 21-7 down to takee a 24-21 lead, Lacoltan Bester provided the Sooners with a highlight-worthy rushing touchdown to match Bells earlier pass to Saunders.dddddddddddd Bester initially thought about passing to Bell after taking the handoff on the end-around, but he eventually reversed course and cut back through seemingly the entire Texas Tech defence. The result was a 35-yard touchdown run that put Oklahoma up 28-24. Webb followed by throwing his second interception of the game -- a tipped pass off the hands of Ward that Oklahomas Gabe Lynn pulled in for the turnover. Williams followed seven plays and 58 yards later with a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Sooners up 35-24, a lead that held up behind an Oklahoma offence that finished with 277 yards rushing on 50 carries. "I felt like we had a lot of momentum when it was 24-21," Amaro said. "We just needed one more stop. We had a good chance of putting it away if we wouldve had one more score. "... You cant be having turnovers on the offensive side and penalties; that really killed us." Bell, who finished with 44 yards rushing on nine carries, and the rest of the Oklahoma offence struggled in the first quarter, gaining just 58 yards on four possessions. It was a similar script to a loss to Texas two weeks ago, as well as last week when the Sooners fell behind 13-0 to Kansas early before rallying. This time, however, it was Oklahomas offence that stole the show against a Texas Tech team that entered the game known for just that. "I think it has to do with team chemistry in our offence," Bell said. "As you can tell, when we are running the ball and running the ball, all of sudden we take a shot, that is when our offence is moving." The Red Raiders did their best to show they belonged among the Big 12s best and in the national spotlight. Once again behind Webb, who has played since Baker Mayfield was injured against Kansas on Oct. 5, Texas Tech took a 7-0 lead -- thanks to a 3-yard touchdown pass from running back Kenny Williams to Ward. Oklahoma answered with two first-half touchdowns -- including the 76-yard strike from Bell to Saunders -- to take a 14-7 lead. The Sooners extended that lead to 21-7 to open the second half after Williams scored on a 3-yard touchdown run.
