third in the Central Division

TORONTO -- Two "silly mistakes" led to two shots on net, and cost Toronto FC a victory in their first game back at BMO Field in almost a month. Nick DeLeon and Perry Kitchen scored on D.C. Uniteds only two shots on target Saturday night in a 2-1 victory over Toronto, putting an end to TFCs six-game unbeaten streak. "Two mistakes, two shots on goal, two goals, two stupid ones as well, two silly mistakes," said an unhappy Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen. "And it cost us three points." Luke Moore scored the lone goal for Toronto, which outshot D.C. United 19-7 -- 6-2 on net. "We were very disappointed because we felt we were right in the game, obviously," said captain Steven Caldwell. "Second half, we gave away two very sloppy goals, cost us in the end. "We rolled up our sleeves and did some lovely little stuff, and huffed and puffed. And just couldnt quite get that finish." Moore, who was originally slated to sit out Saturday night on a one-game suspension, scored in the 60th minute to tie the game 1-1, pouncing on a rebound off a shot by Jackson and poking the ball past D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid. "Disappointing for us," Moore said. "Weve made good strides over the last couple of weeks. Today we maybe took half a step backwards." Moore had received a red card and suspension in Torontos 1-1 draw at Chicago on Wednesday, but TFC appealed and the leagues Independent Review Panel rescinded both his one-day suspension and fine. DeLeon had opened the scoring in the 54th minute, dribbling in on net with Torontos Nick Hagglund draped all over him. DeLeon managed to shake Hagglund long enough to get off a left-footed shot that sailed past Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik and into the right corner. Toronto had been dominating possession and appeared poised to score again in the Eastern Conference showdown when Kitchen stunned the red-clad capacity crowd of 22,581 fans in the 70th minute, heading in a goal off a corner kick to put United back on top. Toronto hadnt lost an MLS matchup since May 3 -- 2-1 to New England at BMO Field -- and Saturdays result was a disappointing one for a team that has been marching up the Eastern standings and is on pace to claim its first playoff berth in franchise history. TFC (6-5-3) went into the game two spots behind second-place D.C. United (8-5-4) in the East. Toronto was reduced to 10 men for the last few minutes when Hagglund was shown a red card after Eddie Johnson, the last man back for United, went down in the 88th. "What frustrated me was how many times in the first half, and the game, that we broke away and they pulled us down, knocked us down and we continued and played on. And nothing happened," Nelsen said of the referees decision. "Unfortunately when it came to our one, the player I think obviously sold a big dummy, did a big dive. . . He was the last man so the correct decision was the red, but if you look at it, there should have been a big pool of water under him when he did that big dirty dive." The referee originally pulled a yellow out of his pocket, but switched it to red several moments later, which puzzled Toronto players. "Theres a lot of things Ive seen that Ive never seen before, to be honest. But obviously I dont want to criticize referees because Ive never been a referee," said Defoe. "Its absolutely irrelevant what the call IS," Caldwell added. "The call WAS a yellow card and Ive never known anything like it. Are we going to start changing penalty decisions, reassessing everything from above, from the stands, and telling the referee in his ear? Essentially theres no point having the referee out there." Despite missing a man, TFC poured it on in the last couple of minutes, and had a couple of excellent chances to tie the game in injury time. Moore fired a blistering shot that glanced just wide of the left corner, the Daniel Lovitz, a second-half substitution, had a shot that was saved only by a spectacular highlight-reel effort by Hamid. "How he brought that down and showed his technique, it was fantastic. An incredible save," Nelsen said. The game marked the return of midfielder Michael Bradley, who received loud applause during team introductions. The Toronto midfielder is fresh off the United States heartbreaking exit from the World Cup in the round of 16. "I felt good, excited to be back," Bradley said. "Im disappointed that the game went the way it did, because this was a big game against a team close to us in the table and it would have been nice to capitalize." Bradley had a spectacular scoring chance in the 34th minute when Defoe found the American with a nice pass. But Bradley launched his shot just wide of the D.C. net. Defoe had his own scoring chance five minutes earlier when he slid onto a low cross from Justin Morrow, but Hamid got his hands on it. Morrow had a decent scoring chance early in the second half when he got the ball alone at the corner of the six-yard-box, but sent his shot wide of the far post. Caldwell said its important the players put Saturdays loss behind them. "We dont look back," he said. "We get another run of six plus games, hopefully six, seven, eight, nine, 10 games. Disappointing to lose that run, we were feeling good and playing very well. On a different day today we could have won the game." Toronto remains at home for its next two games -- TFC hosts Houston on July 12, then the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 16. Shea Weber Jersey . With Serie A kicking off on Saturday, TSN.ca asks five burning questions heading into a season that will see the new signings at Napoli and Fiorentina try to prevent Juventus from hanging on to the Scudetto. How will Carlos Tevez fare at the Old Lady? Title holders Juventus begin their title defence with a new look first choice strike pairing to head their offence, one now very deep at forward. Spanish international Fernando Llorente comes over from Athletic Bilbao after signing a pre-contract agreement in January. Partnering him will be Argentine international Carlos Tevez. In the past few seasons, Tevez has found his name in the headlines just as often for actions off the pitch as he has on. The notoriously mercurial former West Ham and Manchester United man comes to Italy after an acrimonious four-year spell with Manchester City that saw a falling out with manager Roberto Mancini lead to a decreased role with the first team. For their part, the Bianconeri and manager Antonio Conte dont foresee previous attitude issues rearing their heads in Torino, going so far as to handing Tevez Alessandro Del Pieros iconic No. 10 shirt. Make no mistake, Carlos Tevez is not anticipated to cut anything close to the talismanic figure of the legendary Del Piero, but the Argentine must understand quickly the significance of the shirt and conduct himself in a manner befitting of it. If Tevez were to misfire, the likes of the in-form Mirko Vucinic, Sebastian Giovinco, Fabio Quagliarella and Alessandro Matri (if the latter two arent sold) will be chomping at the bit for more playing time. The quality of Carlos Tevez has never been in doubt. The question has always been and still remains whether or not that quality outweighs the headaches that come along with it. Goals will be expected from Tevez, but so will be proper comportment. This enfant terrible will need to become a man. Is Napoli ready to take the next step? Napolis summer began with departures, but since then, its been all about additions. For the second straight offseason, Napoli sold the man perceived to be its best player to moneybags Paris St-Germain. Last years runners-up sold Serie As Capocannoniere winner (leading goal scorer) Uruguayan international Edinson Cavani to PSG, who will join former teammate Ezequiel Lavezzi in the French capital. Manager Walter Mazzarri also left the club to take the reins to the rebuilding project going on at Inter. But then Napoli opened the doors, first installing Champions League and Europa League-winning manager Rafael Benitez at the helm of the club and then making a triple swoop from Real Madrid, bringing in strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon, as well as defender Raul Albiol. The club also turned to the Eridivisie to add to its attacking contingent through PSV Eindhovens pacey Belgian international winger Dries Martens. Benitez then secured a familiar face in goaltender Pepe Reina on loan from Liverpool. The club also wrapped up an extension for star midfielder Marek Hamsik, locking the Slovakian international up until 2018. Expectations will be high for Napoli this season both domestically and in Europe with a Champions League appearance on the horizon. With increased depth almost across the board, the club should have no trouble spearheading both campaigns and look to be the biggest obstacle in Juves way of a third-consecutive Scudetto. Which new coach will have the greatest impact? This was the summer of coaching turnover across Europe with giants like Manchester United (David Moyes,) Barcelona (Gerardo Martino) and Bayern Munich (Pep Guardiola) all featuring new gaffers manning their respective touchline. All in all, there are 21 new managers in the big four European leagues with five of them in Serie A including Benitez at Napoli. Elsewhere, former Palermo manager Giuseppe Sannino takes over at Chievo. Fabio Liverani became the first player of African-descent to play for the national team in 2001 and he is now the first African manager in Serie A at Genoa. Hoping to replicate the success he had at Lille, including winning the Ligue 1 title in 2011, Rudi Garcia makes his Italian bow at Roma. The highest profile appointment, though, is Walter Mazzarri heading to the San Siro to take over from Andrea Stramaccioni at Inter after four seasons at Napoli, where he brought the club back to relevance. Mazzarri will have his hands full with the Nerazzurri, a team coming off a horribly disappointing ninth-place finish in a season ravaged by injury. Diego Milito, Rodrigo Palacio and Dejan Stankovic headed the list of players missing significant time in a season that saw Inter lose 16 matches and cost Stramaccioni his job. Chairman Massimo Morrattis trigger finger is notoriously itchy with this now Inters seventh managerial hire in only five seasons, meaning that Mazzarri will need to hit the ground running. The transition could be a bumpy one, though, as he likely attempts to institute a 3-5-2 to a side that has had little success with that formation in recent years. But Mazzarri - having never been fired in his Serie A managerial career - has a track record that speaks for itself and should be able to put his mark on the 18-time Italian champions, led by burgeoning star Mateo Kovacic, if given the time. Can two former Azzurri stars replicate past success with new clubs? Everyone loves a good comeback story and there are a couple of fascinating narratives to watch out for in Serie A with two former national team players looking to reestablish themselves in time for next summers World Cup in Brazil. The fact that Antonio Cassano is about to embark on his 15th professional season is a small miracle in itself. Less than two years removed from heart surgery, the diminutive forward finds himself playing for his fourth team in five years as he joins Parma after a season at Inter. Cassano has cut a controversial figure over the course of his career, including high profile clashes with coaches both at the club and international level, but his skill and ability to finish are undeniable. Left off Italys Confederations Cup roster earlier this summer, Cassano hopes that a solid showing on a side looking to break out of the mid-table will put him back in the Azzurri conversation. Roberto Donadonis Parma might be the perfect situation for Cassano to reassert himself. Parma scored only 45 goals last season with just Amauri reaching double figures. Not only could Parma sorely use Cassanos nose for the net, but Cassano will want to prove to Donadoni - the man who named Cassano to the Azzurris 2008 Euro team, but left him off of the 2010 World Cup team - that he still has plenty left in the tank. Fiorentinas Giuseppe Rossi is also looking for a fresh start, having lost the better part of the last two seasons with ACL injuries. Signing a pre-contract agreement with the Viola in January and coming over from Villarreal, the American-born Italian international will be making his first appearance in Serie A since playing 19 games for Parma in 2007 while on loan from Manchester United. Rossi tallied 32 goals in 56 matches for Villarreal in 2010-11 before getting hurt and hopes that a return to full fitness will mean a return to bulging the twine for Fiorentinas new look forward contingent. Last years leading scorer, Stefan Jovetic, is now plying his trade for Manchester City and second-leading scorer Adem Llajics long term future is up in the air with Milan sniffing around the Serbian international all summer. Rossi joins German international Mario Gomez up front, as Vincenzo Montellas side looks to build on last seasons fourth-place finish and push for the Scudetto. How will Mario Balotelli react to being the man? Mario Balotelli finally has the chance to be the man for AC Milan. For the first time in his career, Balotelli will be an out-and-out first choice player, no longer having to fight for playing time and grouse about being left on the bench. Its not unfair to suggest that much of Milans title contention hopes are riding squarely on the back of the enigmatic Italian international and Balotelli wouldnt have it any other way. Balotelli, along with Stephan El-Shawaary and the newly signed Andrea Poli, is among the young core of Massimiliano Allegris third-place finishers last season who, like their eternal rivals Inter, are in the midst of a transitional period. With stalwart captain Massimo Ambrosini now with the Viola, Allegri would like nothing more than his young players to display maturity beyond their years under new captain Riccardo Montolivo. Just as capable of flashes of sheer brilliance as he as sheer stupidity, the full scope of the 23-year-olds talents has yet to be put on full display and with the Rossoneris quiet summer and relative lack of transfer activity, there would be no better time for them to emerge. As Balotelli goes, so does Milan. A strong year for the Palermo native entering his first full season at Milan and the Rossoneri can expect to be fighting for a Champions League spot in the spring. If Balotelli falls back into his old habits of petulance and selfishness, the gap between Milan and the likes of Juve, Napoli and Fiorentina might just be too great without Super Marios full, concerted effort. Predicted finish: 1. Juventus 2. Napoli 3. Fiorentina 4. BOSTON – The Blue Jays scorching offence finished a three-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park and sits at or near the top of a number of the sports essential statistical categories. Toronto is first in home runs with 67; its second in slugging percentage (.445) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.773) and sixth in walks (168). Jose Bautista was the celebrated hero of April, smacking eight of his 11 home runs, working to a 1.065 OPS in the opening month. In May its been Edwin Encarnacion, the other half of the Blue Jays deadly three-four lineup combination, who has done most of the damage. With 11 of his 13 home runs this month, including four two-home run games and an OPS of 1.090, you could argue Encarnacions been carrying the lineup. Bautista doesnt want to hear it; not about himself and not about someone else. Theres plenty of credit to go around. "I think everybodys been contributing since day one," Bautista told TSN.ca. "Melky, for instance, is leading the league in hits. Adams (Lind) hitting .320. Brett (Lawrie), even though his average is down a little bit, hes got 20-something RBI. Everybodys helping out. Franciscos got seven, eight home runs and 20 RBI as well. Navarros hitting close to .300." While Bautista insists he hasnt been pitched to differently since Encarnacion has heated up, he expects opposing teams to change their approach once they peruse the pre-scout books and video. "Im sure its going to change," said Bautista. "I think people are definitely noticing and now its going to be more on their radar how hot he is so hopefully that means Im going to get a couple of more mistakes over the plate." Taking his word for it, teams may not be pitching differently to Bautista but at least they now are pitching to him. Consider that in April, while Encarnacion laboured through a relatively slow opening month, Bautista walked 30 times in 122 plate appearances (24.6 per cent). In May, through to the end of Thursdays game, Bautista has walked 11 times in 94 trips to the plate (11.7 per cent). Through Thursday, the Blue Jays had won six of seven and 12 of 17. They have a number of individuals at or near the top of a number of categories. They include: Melky Cabrera: 64 hits, the most in Major League BaseballEdwin Encarnacion: 13 home runs (Tied-3rd); 39 RBI (6th). Jose Bautista: 12 home runs (Tied 6th), 41 walks (1st); .435 on-base percentage (5th); .988 on-base plus slugging (5th). Mark Buehrle: Eight wins, the most in Major League Baseball; 2.16 ERA (8th). GIBBONS LIKES HIS OFFENCE The story of Torontos offensive production got lost earlier this season amid the worry over the starting pitching and the bullpen blowing leads. With the Jays winning, the bats move to the forefront. The skipper has seen it all year. "We can hit, top to bottom," said manager John Gibbons. "Its a strong American League lineup and thats kind of what you need in the American League. Were really a home run threat with most of those guys in that lineup we can burn you that way. I really like the approach we have at the plate. Were taking some hits the other way when its called for. The better pitchers, thats the way theyre attacking you. Were confident right now. You have good games when youre feeling good. Baseball is a game of ups and downs all year long but its a good strong lineup." HENDRIKS TO START FRIDAY The Blue Jays will recall right-hander Liam Hendriks from Buffalo on Friday and he will start the series opener against Oakland. R.A. Dickey will be pushed back to Saturday when he will throw on an extra days rest. "We just decided to split up Buehrle and Dickey," said Gibbons. "Theyre our old reliable guys, kind of our innings eaters." Hendriks is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA and a 0.801 WHIP for the Triple-A Bisons. The 25-year-old is hoping for his first period of sustained major league success. In parts of three seasons with the Twins, Hendriks was 2-13 with an ERA of 6.06. A corresponding roster move will be made before Fridays game. HOME COOKING The Jays kick off a season-high 10-game homestand on Friday. After the Athletics come in for three, the Tampa Bay Rays will check in, followed by the Kansas City Royals for a four-game series. Toronto has a bus trip series to Detroit for three games June 2-4 and then will return home for six games, three each with the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins. For the Blue Jays, it isnt so much about capitalizing on home field advantage as it is trying to create a home field advantage. Toronto is 10-11 at Rogers Centre and 16-11 on the road. "We have to play good at home," said Gibbons. "Weve played actually better on the road this year than we have at home. Were there for awhile so hopefully we can take advantage of that." "I never want to have any outlook at any period of the season and start a sentence with We have to or We need to or Its imperative that we do anything," said Bautista. "Every time in baseball when you have that mentality things seem to go the other way. Weve just got to focus on the preparation, go out and give it our all every single day and take it one day at a time and hope for good results and if we get them, we get them." Oakland comes to town the leader of the American League West with a record of 30-17. Despite a 5-2, 11-inning loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday, the Athletics have won 11 of their last 13 games. Dallas ended the game on a 14-4 run after Mike Conleys 3-pointer gave Memphis its first lead since the first quarter with 4:03 remaining. The Timberwolves lost for the second time in three games despite 18 points from Thaddeus Young. Andrew Wiggins added 12, but shot just 3-of-14 from the field. Mo Williams, the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, had 10 points on 3-for-13 shooting from the floor. Gorgui Dieng scored nine points, grabbed 10 boards and blocked four shots. Martin couldve played during the road trip, but held off until the T-wolves returned home. Yeah, theres a chance (I could play), Martin said after practice Tuesday. ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- Ryan Sproul scored the winner late in double overtime to lift the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 2-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat on Friday in Game 1 of their American Hockey League playoff series. After the Griffins stole the puck in the Heat zone, the puck came around to Sproul at the point and his wrist shot found its way through a maze of bodies with 33.4 seconds to go in the second overtime period. Mattias Backman, playing just his third game in North America, tied the game in the third period for the Griffins. Petr Mrazek stopped 55 shots in the win for Grand Rapids, who killed six penalties in the game, including a five-minute major late in the second period. Their fifth-ranked penalty kill limited Abbotsfords fourth-ranked power plays opportunities, including a penalty to Jordin Tootoo with just three minutes to play in the third. Game 2 is Saturday at the Abbotsford Centre. Olson opened the scoring for the home side at 11:44 of the first. Knight centred for Sven Baertschi in the slot. The Swiss winger was robbed on the one-timer and the rebound but Olson swooped in and buried the loose puck to give the Heat the early lead. The Heat had an opportunity to double their lead on back-to-back power plays midway through the second period. The best chance was Ben Street down low, but Mrazek followed him left to right, kicking his pad out to keep the Griffins within one goal. Grand Rapids best opportunity to tie the game came on a power play with six minutes to play in the second. Andreas Athanasiou broke in and tried to beat Ortio with a slick backhand deke, but the Finnish netminder made a nice glove save to keep his team up by one. The Heat had a glorious opportunity to expand their lead late in the second period. While already on the penalty kill, the Griffins David McIntyre hit the Heats Chris Breen into the boards from behind, drawing a five-minute major. However, they managed only a few scoring chances, leaving the visiting Griffins within a goal. Tootoo nearly tied the game shortly after the major penalty expired, but he rang a wrist shot off the near post. Backman finally evened the game at 12:37 of the third, toe-dragging the puck around rookie Emile Poirier, and firing a shot top corner, blocker side. Michael Granlund had a quality scoring chance late in the third period with Tootoo in the box again, but his sleek backhand was snared by Mrazeks glove, sending the game to overtime. Granlund also had a pair of back-to-back scoring chances about seven minutes into overtime, including a point-blank kick save by Mrazek to extend the overtime period. Mrazek was shaken up around the 16-minute mark of overtime. The Czech goalie rushed way out of his net to chip a puck away from Baertschi. The two collided and it took a great defensive block by Nick Jensen to stop Olson from burying the puck into the empty net. Mrazek was tended to by the trainer but remained in the game. Midway through the second overtime period the Heats line of Baertschi, Olson and Corban Knight had a shift on which they had three quality looks at Mrazek, but failed to end the game. Michael Bennett Eagles Jersey . - Ryan Spooner scored twice to lead the Boston Bruins to a 6-1 victory over the New York Islanders in a preseason game Friday night.MADRID, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo scored a record equaling goal before exiting to injury as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 on Wednesday to take a big step toward the Champions League semifinals. Ronaldo netted his 14th goal of the season in Europes top competition to give Madrid a clear advantage ahead of next weeks quarterfinal return leg in Germany. But it came at a price as the Portugal forward, who came into the first-leg nursing a sore left knee, came off in the 80th minute. Gareth Bale scored early and Isco added another before the half hour mark at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. "Ronaldo has a problem with his knee but at this moment Im not worried about it," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. The Spaniards opened against Dortmund as the Germans had against them in the semifinals last season -- when they thrashed Madrid 4-1 en route to reaching the final with a 4-3 victory on aggregate. In Wednesdays other quarterfinal first leg, Paris Saint-Germain beat Chelsea 3-1 in the French capital. Madrid certainly didnt need inspiration after last seasons loss to Dortmund, which was without suspended striker Robert Lewandowski and five more regulars to injury as it fielded just four of the players present in last seasons 4-1 win. "The goals we gave up tonight were not because of this," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. "It was too easy (for them), and thats not what we wanted. We made some mistakes and we were punished." The energetic start saw Bale nearly miss Dani Carvajals short pass inside the area before stretching to toe poke his fifth goal of the competition under goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller after just three minutes. Weidenfeller was sharp despite Madrids early onslaught as he punched free kicks from Ronaldo and Bale over the bar. He also stayed in the game despite wincing in pain after Marco Reus made a clearance that also connected with the keepers hands. With forward Angeel Di Maria out to a gastro virus, Isco showed good poise to gather a loose ball in front of the area and slide home a low shot for 2-0 in the 27th minute.dddddddddddd. The Spain midfielders goal was just the boost Madrid needed as Dortmund began to find its rhythm, with Kevin Grosskreutz forcing Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas into a low stop in the 33rd. Ronaldo, playing in his 100th Champions League game, was clearly eager to match the record 14 goals scored by Lionel Messi in one Champions League campaign. Luka Modric made it happen as the Croat pounced on a poor Dortmund pass deep in its own area in the 57th minute and picked out Ronaldo, who dribbled around Weidenfeller for his 45th goal of the season. Jose Altafini also scored 14 goals in the 1962/63 European Cup campaign for AC Milan. "We did what we prepared for well," Ancelotti said. "We used a lot of energy in the first half and were tired. So we dropped the team back a little in the second half -- while looking to score on the counter." While Ronaldo and Karim Benzema continued to threaten Dortmunds goal, Madrid was fortunate not to concede under pressure as Pepe blocked Reus shot from inside the area after Casillas failed to control a cross. Madrids defence blocked several Dortmund shots during the final stages. "You have to do the right tactical things against the best teams in the world. We can do better than we did tonight," said Klopp, who rued the late misses. "(Losing) 3-0 you are not cool, you are not confident, you are under pressure and you are not confident in the box. We had chances." Madrid, which is vying for a record 10th European Cup, is now on the cusp of a fourth straight appearance in the semifinals -- a welcome lift after a difficult run in the Spanish league. In Tuesdays matches, defending champion Bayern Munich drew 1-1 at Manchester United, and Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 at Barcelona. Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Bacote scored a career-high 31 points on a perfect shooting effort from the floor, leading Old Dominion to a 73-67 upset of No. 14 VCU at the Constant Center. Bacote hit all eight of his field goal attempts and went 4-for-4 from 3-point range, while the Monarchs knocked down 9-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc to earn their first win over a ranked opponent since 2009. The Rams, on the other hand, struggled from the perimeter for much of the day and shot 39 percent overall in being dealt a second defeat in their last three games. Give (ODU) Coach (Jeff) Jones and his staff and his team a lot of credit, said VCU head coach Shaka Smart. They really came out with an aggressiveness about them at both ends of the floor, that really was the difference in the game. Trey Freeman added 15 points in a game the Monarchs (5-1) led virtually the entire way due to their marksmanship from the perimeter and ability to handle VCUs trademark pressure defense. I think our guys thought they could win. I dont know that they came into the game expecting to win, said Jones. We hadnt put together 40 minutes against that kind of team. Treveon Graham tallied 29 points for VCU (4-2), with Melvin Johnson recording 14 in the loss. ODU put the Rams in a sizeable hole midway through the opening half on the strength of its long-range shooting success. The Monarchs made each of their five 3-point attempts -- with Bacote draining the first two and Ambrose Mosley the last three -- during a 17-2 run that turned a tie game into a 23-8 lead. The Monarchs maintained a double-digit cushion well into the second half, building a 32-18 advantage at the break by beating VCU at its own game. Old Dominion committed just four turnovers as Freeman successfully navigated the Rams press, while the Rams had nine giveaways that led to 12 Monarchs points over the opening period. For most of the game I thought we had that nice balance, Jones said. We wanted to be aggressive, but we wanted to be smart. Down by as many as 18 early in the second half and trailing 57-40 with under 4 1/2 minutes to go, VCU finally began to close the gap. Graham ripped off eight straight points to get the margin under 10, then later drilled a trey to cap a 13-2 spurt that pulled the Rams within 59-53 with 1:34 remaining. The Monarchs were able to hold on by hitting their foul shots, however, going 12-of-14 from the charity stripe in the final minute. ODU ended the game 24-of-30 at the free throw line, with VCU converting only 13 of its 22 chances. Game Notes The Monarchs had dropped five straight against ranked teams since a 61-57 decision over then-No. 11 Georgetown on Dec. 19, 2009 ... Bacotes previous career best was 28 points, set twice last season ... VCU had won four straight meetings between the former Sun Belt and CAA rivals, with Old Dominions last victory over the Rams coming in the 2011 CAA Tournament title game ... VCU, which held a 35-32 edge on the boards, had won 22 straight in which it outrebounded its opponent. Rand and Sanchez walked off

Erstellt 30.07.2018 08:24 von zxlbxj1 30.07.2018 08:24 In der Kategorie Allgemein.

For 10 years, Canadian Louis-Philippe Ladouceur has avoided the NFL spotlight while playing in one of footballs most high-profile markets. But the Dallas Cowboys long-snapper is enjoying some attention these days after recently being added to the Pro Bowl roster for the first time. The Montreal native was selected as a need player by Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh and will suit up for the Ravens-coached squad Sunday at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. There are certain things in football you want to do, the 33-year-old said this week in a phone interview. Obviously, the Super Bowl is the ultimate in football and making it as far as possible in the playoffs, thats always No. 1.But the second thing is to get recognized and the best way to get recognized in this league is either with a Pro Bowl invitation or contract. Ive played 10 years so Ive had many contracts and felt like the next thing was to be invited to the Pro Bowl. Its a big deal for me, a big accomplishment in my career. It had a lot of meaning before and has an even bigger meaning now.Ladouceur will be one of seven Cowboys appearing in the Pro Bowl. The New England Patriots and defending champion Seattle Seahawks will square off in Arizona on Feb. 1 in the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowl invitation is a heady accomplishment for a former defensive lineman who joined the Cowboys three games into the 05 season. Ladouceur originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent out of the University of California before being released.Ladouceur signed with Dallas after then-head coach Bill Parcells opted to make a change at long snapper. The Cowboys were staying in California between road games against San Francisco and Oakland and gave the former Cal star a look. The six-foot-five, 255-pound Ladouceur hasnt looked back. Hes been with Dallas ever since, having never missed a punt (493 snaps and counting), field goal (214) or convert (302) attempt. In 2013, Dallas rewarded Ladouceur with a five-year contract.L.P., he does a third of my job, it all starts with him and hes been doing it for a long time, Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey said of Ladouceur on the teams website. Im real lucky to have him.I put him up there with some of the best in the league and I have a lot of respect for what he does. He makes my job easier.Ladouceur has also stayed healthy. The Cowboys third-longest tenured player hasnt missed an NFL game during his career while registering 14 special-teams tackles.Dallas finished atop the NFC East with a 12-4 record to secure its first playoff appearance since 09. But it was an eventful return as both of the Cowboys post-season contests (a 24-20 wild-card win over Detroit on Jan. 4 and 26-21 divisional loss to Green Bay on Jan. 11) included controversial officiating calls. In the wild-card game, Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens was flagged for pass interference with 8:25 remaining and Detroit facing third-and-one while leading 20-17. But the officials picked up the flag without explanation. The following weekend at Lambeau Field, Dallas trailed 26-21 with 4:42 remaining when quarterback Tony Romo completed a fourth-down pass to Dez Bryant at Green Bays one-yard line. But the play was overruled as Bryant was deemed to not have made a legal catch. Dallas turned the ball over on downs, allowing Green Bay to advance to the NFC championship game against Seattle. On Sunday, the Seahawks rallied from a 19-7 fourth-quarter deficit for a wild 28-22 overtime victory. But Ladouceur wasnt blaming the officials for Dallass loss to Green Bay.Theres so many more other plays we couldve made in that game to change the outcome, he said. Theres still 60-some plays on offence, 60-some plays on defence and 20 some-odd plays on special teams that couldve made a difference. That call, yeah, couldve made a difference but at the end of the day if we wanted to win that game we shouldve won it at a different spot and time in the game.Ladouceur said his Pro Bowl selection has taken some of the sting away from the Green Bay loss.I wish I wouldve played in that game Sunday, Im not going to lie to you, Ladouceur said. We had a really good season . . . I just thought we had a heck of a chance in Green Bay.To have the Pro Bowl at the end of the season kind of makes it a little bit bittersweet but its still a hell of a deal. Garcia had eight birdies overall to go with a lone bogey on the fourth to move to an 18-under total of 198 at the Asian Tour event. "I was able to hit some really nice shots and then was able to roll two or three really good putts in and it was nice to be able to finish birdie, birdie on this difficult finishing stretch," Garcia said.MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins arent picky about how they get on base this season. And if the most-walked team in the majors can get more starting pitching performances as they did Saturday, the Twins likely wont mind their status as a middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to batting average. Phil Hughes struck out six in seven innings, Josmil Pinto hit his fifth homer of the season and the Twins scored two runs in the fifth without a hit in their 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Minnesota looked to be in for a long afternoon after Detroit took an early 2-0 lead and Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez handled the Twins early. But Sanchez left in the third with a blister on his middle finger on his throwing hand, forcing newly recalled Jose Ortega (0-1) into action. Ortega, who had just arrived from Triple-A Toledo, and Phil Coke then combined to walk six Twins -- five in the fifth. A throwing error by catcher Bryan Holaday and a bases-loaded walk by Coke allowed Minnesota, hitless at that point, to tie the game. Minnesota entered the game with a majors-leading 113 walks this season, and added eight more on Saturday. "As weve talked about many times now, were taking our walks and getting people on, and you score runs like that," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Thats a good way to go about your business." Especially with Hughes rolling. Hughes (2-1) didnt walk a batter, retired 16 straight at one point and has won two straight -- a welcome sight for a Twins rotation that had produced only six quality starts this season. Although he acknowledged the need for more innings from his starters, Gardenhire preached patience with his rotation earlier in the day, saying the team believes its starting pitchers will do well. For one afternoon, at least, Hughes gave his manager a glimpse of that. "Anytime your starter doesnt give you innings, its up to the next guy to kind of bounce back and hopefully save the bullpen a little bit," Hughes said a day after the Twins bullpen threw six-plus innings in Friday nights loss. Trevor Plouffes two-run single off Coke scored Eduardo Escobar and Brian Dozier put the Twins ahead for good in the fifth, and Pintos homer off Al Albuquerque in the eighth provided an insurance run. "It was a tough spot for the entire bullpen," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "We were a little bit strapped going into today as it was. Sanchezs injury straps us even more." Detroit took a first-inning lead after Sam Fuld couldnt hang onto Miguel Cabreras fly to deeep right, allowing Torii Hunter to score from first.dddddddddddd Cabrera went to third on Fulds bad throw and scored on Victor Martinezs sacrifice fly. That was all the Tigers could muster against Hughes, though. The veteran right-hander made efficient work of Detroits lineup the next six innings. Jared Burton pitched a scoreless eighth and Glen Perkins pitched the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances. "After the first I was coming apart a little bit, and not really staying within myself, overthrowing a little bit and coming out of my mechanics," Hughes said. "But I was able to settle down pretty quick and get on a little bit of a roll, which was nice." Martinez led off the ninth with a homer. Sanchez threw 53 pitches without allowing a hit and was in the middle of Doziers at-bat when Holaday, head trainer Kevin Rand and pitching coach Jeff Jones went to the mound. Shortly after being joined by Ausmus, Rand and Sanchez walked off the field. "It looked nasty, it really did," Ausmus said. "As soon as I went out there and saw it I was caught between throwing up and pulling him out of the game. It looked gross." Notes: Trevor Plouffe took a pitch off the arm in the fourth and later came out of the game. Gardenhire said he would be day to day. ... The Tigers optioned RHP Justin Miller -- who pitched two-thirds innings on Friday night and allowed a run and two hits -- to Toledo to make room for Ortega. "It had nothing to do with how Justin pitched last night. He had pitched well the previous two outings, it was just we needed help for the bullpen," Ausmus said. ... Ausmus says he plans to put C Alex Avila (shin) back into the lineup Sunday. Avila was hurt sliding into home plate on Friday. Ausmus reiterated RHP Rick Porcello (elbow) should make his next scheduled start Wednesday. Porcello was hurt after a line drive deflected off his glove and hit his throwing elbow. ... A day after his relievers threw 6 2-3 innings, Ron Gardenhire put starter Mike Pelfrey in the bullpen as "an emergency-type guy." Asked about tweaking his starting rotation, Gardenhire said, "Youve got to give them a little bit of time here. These guys are here for a reason, we think theyre going to be good and hopefully theyll get rolling and we dont have to have this conversation." . The Tigers and Twins wrap up their three-game series on Sunday when Justin Verlander (3-1) takes the mound for Detroit. Minnesota righty Kyle Gibson (3-1) will make his start against the Tigers for the first time. In a scramble by NHL teams to free space under the salary cap before the start of free agency, five veteran players were placed on unconditional waivers on Wednesday. The Minnesota Wild confirmed they waived defenceman Tom Gilbert for the purpose of buying out the remaining year of his contract. The Nashville Predators said they placed forward Sergei Kostitsyn on waivers. Also waived, according to a person familiar with the moves, were Detroit defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo, Vancouver defenceman Keith Ballard and Buffalo forward Nathan Gerbe. The person revealed the list of waived players to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the NHL doesnt announce these moves. "Due to the NHL salary cap decreasing this season, we needed to make this difficult decision to give the team more flexibility," Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said regarding the teams decision to waive Gilbert. The other four players waived on Wednesday could land in the same buyout category in moves made before the free-agency period opens at noon Friday. Former New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro cleared waivers and had his contract bought out by the team. Washington defenceman Jeff Schultz also cleared waivers and is expected to have the remaining two years and $6 million left on his contract bought out. The Philadelphia Flyers issued qualifying offers to retain the rights to defencemen Erik Gustafsson, Oliver Lauridsen, Brandon Manning and forward Eric Wellwood. The Flyers declined to make offers to defenceman Blake Kessel and forward Mitch Wahl, allowing both to become unrestricted free agents. The St. Louis Blues re-signed defenceman Jordan Leopold to a two-year contract. Leopold is a 10-year veteran who had two assists in 15 regular-season games with St. Louis after being acquired by the Blues in a trade with Buffalo on March 31. Teams had until Wednesday to place players on waivers in order to buy out their contracts. Under the collective bargaining agreement, teams are allowed to buy out contracts of two players over the next two seasons. The clause was included to allow teams to clear space under the salary cap, which is dropping from $70.2 million last season to $64.3 million. Contracts of bought-out players wont count against a teams salary cap, though the players will be paid two-thirds of their remaining salary over double the years remaining on their contracts. Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek announced on his Twitter account that he is on his way out of Toronto. Set to make $3.5 million over the final two years of his contract, Komisarek is expected to be bought out after spending part of last season playing in the minors. The Florida Panthers announced they used a standard buyout on 36-year-old defenceman Filip Kuba, meaning the remaining year of his contract will still count against the salary cap. Kuba had a goal and nine assists in 44 games last season. Gilbert is a seven-year veteran, who was set to make $3 million in the final year of his deal. The Wild have one of the NHLs most expensive payrolls and needed to make the move to free up space. From Bloomington, Minn., Gilbert failed to make much of an impact with his hometown team after the Wild acquired him in a trade with Edmonton in 2012. Gilbert managed just three goals and 15 assists in 63 games. Kostitsyn had one year left on his deal and was scheduled to make $3 million next season. The move didnt come as a surprise after Kostitsyn landed in coach Barry Trotzs doghouse last season, his third with Nashville. Kostitsyn is a six-year NHL veteran who had three goals and 12 assists in 46 games. Kostitsyn has hinted that he could be open to playing in Russias Kontinental Hockey League next season. Ballard was scheduled to make $4.2 million in each of the final two years of his contract. He is an eight-year NHL player, who managed just two assists in 36 games with the Canucks last season. The Sabres decision to place Gerbe on waivers came as a surprise after general manager Darcy Regier indicated he had no plans to buy out any of his players. Gerbe had difficulty carving out a role during five seasons with Sabres. Buffalo did re-sign journeyman forward Matt Ellis to a two-year contract. If Ellis doesnt play with the Sabres, the team is counting on him to serve as captain at AHL Rochester. Colaiacovo struggled in his first and only season with the Red Wings, failing to play to his two-year, $4 million contract. He had an assist in six games last season, and added an assist in nine playoff games. NEW YORK -- Boston forward Jarome Iginla has been named the NHLs first star for March after his explosive month helped the Bruins climb to the top of the standings. Iginla led all players with 13 goals in March and added four assists for 17 points in 17 games. He scored on a league-best 31 per cent of his shots over the month to power the Bruins to a 15-1-1 record. The 36-year-old Edmonton native scored his 30th goal of the season on Saturday, reaching the milestone for the 12th time in his 17-year career. He also recorded his 560th career goal, tying Guy Lafleur for 24th in NHL history. Detroits Gustav Nyquist earned second-star honours. Nyquist had 12 goals and 18 points to help the Red Wings move into the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia centre Claude Giroux has been named the third star. Giroux led all players with 15 assists and 21 points to help the Flyers complete a 9-3-2 March and maintain third place in the Metropolitan Division. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.NEW YORK -- Rick Nash scored the winning goal with 1:42 left, on New Yorks third shot of the third period, and the Rangers clinched home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs with a 2-1 victory over the NHL-worst Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. New York secured second place in the Metropolitan Division when the Philadelphia Flyers lost at Tampa Bay later Thursday. The Rangers will face either the Flyers or Columbus in the opening round of the post-season. The Rangers struggled throughout against the lowly Sabres and goalie Matt Hackett, who played in just his seventh NHL game of the season. Drew Stafford gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead in the second, and Benoit Pouliot tied in in the final minute of the frame. Nash fired a one-timer off a cross-zone feed from Martin St. Louis, and sent the puck past Hacketts glove to break the 1-1 tie for his 26th goal. The Rangers then killed a late penalty against Brian Boyle, the third Sabres power play of the third period. Drew Stafford gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead in the second, and Benoit Pouliot tied in in the final minute of the frame. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 23 shots in the win, New Yorks last home game of the season. The Rangers final game is at Montreal on Saturday. Hackett made 28 saves for the Sabres, 2-15-1 in their last 18 games. The Rangers dominated the Sabres 18-1 in shots in the second period, yet had only a 1-1 tie to show for it. Buffalo recorded the first five shots of the game, and New York didnt record its first until Pouliots partial breakaway 7:30 in. However, the Rangers had a 27-13 edge through 40 minutes. The Sabres made the most of their only second-period shot and grabbedd a 1-0 lead on it with 10:54 left in the period.dddddddddddd Buffalo defenceman Mike Weber drifted backward with the puck from the right circle toward the blue line, and flipped a shot toward the Rangers net. Stafford, stationed in front of Lundqvist, got enough of his stick on it to deflect it into the net for his 16th goal of the season. New York did nothing with its two power plays in the first period or its next two in the second after a two-goal performance with the man advantage Tuesday against Carolina. It took until there were only 30.4 seconds left in the middle frame to get even with the Sabres. Hackett had been tough up until then, including shaking off a hard one-timer off the stick of Brad Richards that struck him flush in the forehead portion of his mask with 2:11 remaining in the period. After being briefly attended to on the ice by medical personnel, Hackett got up off his knees and stayed in the game. Pouliot took a pass across the Sabres zone in the left circle and fired a drive past Hackett to tie it. It was Pouliots 15th goal of the season and third in five games. NOTES: Lundqvist had a run of 26 minutes, 32 seconds between saves -- spanning from the first period until the third. ... Stafford and Sabres D Henrik Tallinder both returned to the lineup after missing four games each due to injury. Stafford has six goals and nine points in his past 13 games. ... Coetzee was flawless on the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club to clinch his maiden title after 24 top 10 finishes. He won by three shots from Englands Tyrrell Hatton (66), South Koreas Jin Jeong (71) and Walters (73), who needed an eagle on the last to take Coetzee to a playoff and made bogey instead. r contract that pays

MIAMI -- Maybe in a video game. Possibly in the pregame layup line. But shoot this way in the NBA Finals, against the two-time defending champions? "Its not something you can plan for," San Antonio reserve Manu Ginobili said. "There was no magic plays. We just moved the ball and every shot went in." Not quite every shot. But just about. Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 29 points, and the Spurs made a finals-record 75.8 per cent of their shots in the first half in a 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night that gave them a 2-1 lead. The Spurs made 19 of their first 21 shots and finished 25 of 33 in the first half, bettering the 75 per cent shooting by Orlando against the Lakers in the 2009 finals. "Its a hit-or-miss league," Miamis Dwyane Wade said. The Spurs didnt do much missing. "I dont think well ever shoot 76 per cent in a half ever again," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. The Spurs led by as much as 25 and were only briefly challenged in their second lopsided victory in the series. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade had 22 points for the Heat, who host Game 4 on Thursday. Returning to the arena where they were oh-so-close to winning a fifth championship last year, the Spurs came out playing like they were trying to build a lead that was impossible to blow. They shot 13 of 15 and led 41-25 lead after the first quarter, then hit their first six shots of the second in front of a stunned crowd in Miami to go ahead 55-30. Leonard scored only 18 points in the first two games, looking frustrated while getting into foul trouble trying to defend James in Game 2. But he had his outside shot working early, making his first six shots and finishing 10 of 13 from the field. "I just found a rhythm and my teammates found me the ball. I made shots," Leonard said. The last three NBA seasons ended in this building, the last two followed by Heat championship parades. The Spurs nearly cancelled the last one, building a five-point lead in the final half-minute of regulation of Game 6, a title seeming so certain that workers were already making preparations around the court. But the Heat rallied to win in overtime and took Game 7, leaving the Spurs with a summer to think about the one that got away. Theyre in good shape to get another chance. With the league scrapping the 2-3-2 format for the NBA Finals --in which the lower seed played three consecutive home games -- the Spurs would have a chance to wrap it up in San Antonio on Sunday in Game 5 if they can win Thursday. Chris Bosh took only four shots and scored nine points for the Heat, who for the second straight year will have to overcome a 2-1 finals deficit after being blown out in Game 3. This rout came on their home floor, where they had been 8-0 this post-season and had won a franchise-record 11 in a row since the Spurs beat them in Game 1 last year. San Antonio inserted Boris Diaw into the lineup, countering Miamis small lineup and creating more ball movement that clearly helped Leonard. The game got off to a crisp start, with the Spurs making their first five shots and Miami opening 4 for 4. Turned out the Spurs were just getting started. Coach Erik Spoelstra planned to communicate with James to make sure there were no lingering problems from the cramps that forced him to miss the final minutes of the opener. But there was no way he could rest James early, since he was the only one keeping the Heat in the game. He had 14 of their first 20 points, but even James couldnt keep up with the Spurs pace. The Spurs "came out at a different gear than what we were playing at, and it just seemed we were on our heels the most part of the first half," Spoelstra said. San Antonio led 71-50 at halftime. It was the first 70-point first half in the finals since the Lakers scored 75 against Boston in Game 2 in 1987. The Heat finally got into it in the third, running off 10 straight points to cut a 17-point deficit to 81-74 on a drive by Norris Cole, who had replaced an ineffective Mario Chalmers. That was as close as Miami would get, as the Spurs pulled away in the fourth. Notes: Wade appeared in his 150th post-season game and passed Dirk Nowitzki (3,455 points) for 17th on the post-season scoring list. ... The Heat fell to 68-20 in the post-season at American Airlines Arena. Their .782 winning percentage entering the game trailed only the Lakers .792 mark at Staples Center. B.J. Hill Jersey . Playing in his 19th career final, the second-seeded Tsonga was favourite to win the Open 13 for the third time and to secure an 11th career title, but he struggled with Gulbis attacking approach.MONTREAL - Andrei Markov is staying with the only NHL club he has ever known. The 35-year-old defenceman agreed to terms of a US$17.25-million, three-year contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. Markov was due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He said on a conference call that signing a new deal with Montreal was his first priority. "I knew before the season was over Id like to stay with the Montreal Canadiens, so Im happy the deal was done and Im looking forward now. I feel like Im at home here. I feel comfortable. Id like to stay for the rest of my career. Ive never known (free agency), but it doesnt matter. Im happy with that deal." Markov will earn the same salary, $5.75 million per season, that he made in each of his last two contracts over the past seven years. As a player 35 or over, he is guaranteed the full amount of his new deal. "We are very happy to have secured a long term agreement with Andrei," general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement. "He is an important part of our group of core players. "He is healthy, shows a very good work ethic and has great leadership skills. He plays big minutes against the top opponents, and game-changing defencemen of his calibre are hard to find." Markov will be 38 when the deal expires after the 2016-17 season, but feels it is too early to say if it will be his last contract. There were fears that his career was over when a succession of knee injuries limited him to only 65 games over three years from 2009-10 to 20011-12, but he played all 48 games of the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign and missed only one regular season game this season.dddddddddddd He had seven goals and 36 assists and was plus-12 this season, while getting a team-high 25:14 of ice time per game. He added a goal and nine assists in 17 playoff games as the Canadiens reached the Eastern Conference final. He also played for Russia at the Sochi Olympics. While he has slowed in a recent years, the Voskresensk, Russia native combines a solid defensive game with first-rate passing and playmaking skills from the point on power plays. "It wasnt easy when I had injuries, but I always stayed positive," Markov said. "The last two years I felt good. My health is good. I enjoy the game like I used to. Im looking forward to next season." Markov holds Russian and Canadian citizenship, having become a Canadian citizen in 2010. He was drafted in the sixth round, 162nd overall, by Montreal in 1998. He made his NHL debut in 2000. In 765 regular season games, he has 98 goals and 344 assists. His best seasons were 2007-08, when he had 16 goals and 58 points and 2008-09, when he had 12 goals and 64 points. He was the teams second potential free agent to sign ahead of July 1. Last week, forward Dale Weise inked a two-year contract that pays $1.025 million per season. Bergevin now faces negotiations with potential restricted free agents P.K. Subban and Lars Eller, while potential UFAs include captain Brian Gionta and defenceman Mike Weaver. Tuesday and Wednesday

Louis van Gaal wants West Ham to enjoy their Boleyn Ground farewell on Tuesday but remains ruthless in his desire for a vital Manchester United victory. The Hammers host Man United, live on Sky Sports, in their final home game before making the move to the Olympic Stadium next season and emotions are bound to be high among the Boleyn faithful. But the game is just as important for Van Gaals side, who know they can move ahead of rivals Manchester City into fourth place with victory in the East End of London. That would leave them needing only to beat Bournemouth on the final day of the Premier League season to ensure Champions League football for themselves and a place in the Europa League for City.Man United have already spoiled one big Boleyn Ground night for West Ham when they knocked them out of the FA Cup in a sixth-round replay last month. Sir Trevor Brooking expects Wednesdays final match at the Boleyn Ground to be emotional Asked if United can use the emotion of the night against West Ham, Van Gaal said: Yes it is a big night. I think the players shall feel that also.Tuesday we have to play against an opponent who says goodbye to the stadium. So they wont want to lose in their own stadium. They have already lost to Man United in the FA Cup match. That is also history. That is not good for us. And West Ham United is a very good team. Paul Scholes believes Manchester United fans have not been entertained this season under Louis van Gaal We have a lot of respect for West Ham. I think it is a historical big club in England and so we dont want to spoil their party but we need the three points and that is different.Manchester United will be without Marouane Fellaini, one of the stars of their FA Cup win, and Van Gaal concedes the loss of the Belgium international will make life tougher, especially at set-pieces. Louis van Gaal is wary of West Hams threat from set pieces We are normally the smallest team in the Premier League so we always have problems with set plays, he added. We have to cope with that and you are right, I can not deny that. It is the first time we are talking about our opponent and not about my sacking! Thank you, thank you for that. West Ham boss Slaven Bilic says he is focused on their match against Manchester United and not the fact its their last game at the Boleyn Ground Yes. I am very worried about that. I am always organising. We always have a meeting about that - every game - and it also takes a long time to organise it well.Van Gaal was keeping his cards close to his chest on team selection, having omitted Daley Blind and Marcus Rashford for the 1-0 win over Norwich, and he then lost another striker - Anthony Martial - in the warm-up at Carrow Road. Marcus Rashford could return after missing win over Norwich He said: That always depends on the data of my fatigue specialist. I have to decide then on the data of my fatigue specialist who I am taking with me. It is always like that. It can happen that I leave players at home as they are too tired. As for Martials fitness he added: We have to wait if his muscle is still tight as I dont take any risks as he is a very important player. We dont want a rupture. That is very important for us. Also See: West Ham v Man Utd preview Watch: The Boleyn Boys Who gets into Europe? Jason Dickinsons goal 57 seconds into overtime gave the Storm a 3-2 win over the North Bay Battalion on Thursday for a 1-0 series lead. But Walker was far from happy with his teams performance. "To be honest with you, we have to play better," Walker said. "We have to focus on winning our battles, skating more and we cant take for granted that were here. They (the Battalion) earned their spot and we earned our spot. We have to start skating and start playing. "We did it in the first and then it was like we werent satisfied. There was something more out there, something better. There isnt anything better than what we were doing in the first." The first period was all Guelph, as they outshot the Battalion 16-6 and beat them to pucks right from the opening faceoff. Holding the leagues most potent offence scoreless in the first period seemed to give North Bay more confidence as the game went on. Battalion head coach Stan Butler was happy with the way his team matched up against the heavily favoured Storm. "I thought we played hard and it was a pretty even game. Once you get in overtime, one shot and its done," Butler said. "They have a great team and thats the style we have to play. We have to play hard, we have to check up ice, track the puck hard and not give them time and space. "If we sit back and watch like we did in the first period and allow them time and space, theyll do serious damage." The Battalion benefited from the scoreless opening 20 minutes by taking iit to the Storm in the second.dddddddddddd They were rewarded early when Ben Thomson, on a power play, snapped a fat rebound past goalie Justin Nichols, who made 32 saves on the night, for a 1-0 lead at 3:06. But Guelphs Brock McGinn evened the scored a minute later. North Bay continued to play a tough defensive game, holding the Storm to just seven shots in the second period. The Battalion regained the lead 3:35 into the third, as Jamie Lewis wrist shot from the faceoff circle found the top corner past Nichols. But Guelph made the most of the few scoring chances it had, and came back to tie the game once again on its second shot of the third period. Robby Fabbri found Mitchell cruising over the blue-line and he ripped a wrist shot over Smith for his 11th goal of the playoffs at 12:23. With the goal, Mitchell moved ahead of teammate Kerby Rychel, into first place in playoff points with 24. Guelph ended the game on its first shot of the extra period, with Dickinson wristing a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle over Smiths glove for his sixth goal of the playoffs. Smith made 27 saves. Guelph finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, while North Bay was 1-for-2 with the man advantage. North Bay captain Barclay Goodrow said the Battalion are looking forward to stepping back on the ice in less than 24 hours for a chance at evening the series before heading home for Game 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday. "I think the advantage of playing back-to-back is you can get right back at it and you dont lose too much of the momentum you gained from the game before. Hopefully, we come out tomorrow and forget what happened tonight and keep on going." NASHVILLE -- Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith were too much for the Nashville Predators. Keith scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Blackhawks to a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. Kane and Nick Leddy also scored for Chicago, which has won five of six. Shea Weber scored for the Predators. Keith scored the games first goal at 1:29 of the opening period on a slap shot from the left side that beat Nashville goaltender Carter Hutton on the stick side. "I try to have a good gap and be good defensively," Keith said. "As a defenceman, thats your first and foremost job is how you defend. Its something I take a lot of pride in. The offence kind of just takes care of itself." Making his fourth consecutive start, Hutton had his three-game winning streak snapped. On Monday, he was selected the NHLs third star of the week. Hutton spent the past two seasons in the Blackhawks organization before signing with Nashville in the off-season. Weber tied it at 3:03 of the first with a power-play goal. On the right side, Roman Josi faked a shot and then sent a pass to Weber at the top of the right circle where the Nashville captain beat Chicago goaltender Antti Raanta with a one-timer. That was the only goal Raanta allowed in the first, despite 17 Nashville shots on goal in the period. Chicago only allowed 11 Nashville shots over the final two periods combined. "I just thought we just mismanaged a few situations tonight that gave them enough momentum," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We should have got points out of this game. We played well enough to do that, but the second period and the third period, they did a good job. We couldnt get any forecheck going. We couldnt get any sustained pressure." The Blackhawks answered back at 16:14 of the first with a highlight reel power-play goal by Kane. Skating down the right side, the left-handed shooting Kane lifted a tough angle backhand just underneath the crossbar for his team-leading 20th goal of the season. "Its a play that we have been trying off the breakout on the power play with the entry," Kane said. "I just tried to hit that spot, lucky enough, it went in." It was the 10th straight game in which Kane has recorded at least one point, two shy of his career best. "Hes got a lot of tools," Hutton said. "He can do a lot of things with the puck. Hes a pretty special player. We gave him time and space like that he kind of made us pay." Leddy scored on the power play at 11:33 of the second to cap the scoring. Standing on the left side, he put home the rebound of Brandon Saads shot from the right side. The puck entered and exited the net so quickly, it was initially ruled no goal on the ice, but a quick video review credited Leddy with his fourth of the season. "I liked our game," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "I liked our attention to detail, very businesslike and came out to a good start. The power play was big again for us." Notes: The Blackhawks have scored at least one power-play goal in their past 10 games. Chicago LW Bryan Bickell returned to the lineup after missing 14 games with a lower-body injury. Predators G Marek Mazanec missed the game with an illness. Magnus Hellberg was recalled under emergency conditions from Milwaukee of the AHL to serve as Huttons backup. Daeshon Hall Panthers Jersey . Jones took a beating, the worst one of his record reign, in a bout against Alexander Gustafsson that knocked the light heavyweight champion on the canvas for the first time in his career and put his belt in jeopardy.MIAMI -- Two days after Jeff Mathis was the centre of a controversial play at the plate, he came up big for the Miami Marlins. Mathis scored the winning run in the 10th inning of a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. He doubled to left to lead off the inning against Sam LeCure (1-3), advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Reed Johnson, and scored on a base hit to centre by Christian Yelich. "Hes a huge part of our team, he cares a lot, not only about winning, but the ball club," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "...So for him to come up there in that situation and get the big hit to start us off was huge and to score the winning run, I know that means a lot to him and I know hell sleep good tonight." Mathis, who had a call at the plate overturned in Thursdays 3-1 loss as replay officials ruled that he was blocking the plate, had another play at home in the eighth inning of Saturdays game. Billy Hamilton hit a bloop single to left field and Mathis stayed back to wait for Yelichs throw home as Ramon Santiago slid in safely to tie the game at 1-1. "Back in the day, that guys out," Redmond said. "Next year hell be out." After the inning, the typically mild-mannered Mathis was visibly frustrated in the dugout. "Any time you give up the lead after a game like that with the outing that Nathan (Eovaldi) gave us is pretty frustrating," Mathis said. The Marlins Mike Dunn (9-5) struck out two batters in the top of the 10th after Chris Heisey delivered a pinch-hit triple. "There was the option to squeeze right there and that is something we thought about, but Billy (Hamilton) has been good with runners in scoring position," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "What we needed was a base hit." Both starting pitchers, the Reds Homer Bailey and the Marlins Nathan Eovaldi, pitched seven innings and allowed one run. The Marlins snapped a three-game losing streeak overall and a seven-game skid to the Reds.dddddddddddd Yelich doubled in the third inning and Jordany Valdespin drove him home with a single to centre to give the Marlins an early 1-0 lead. TRAINERS ROOM Marlins All-Star Henderson Alvarez was placed on the disabled list on Friday, retroactive to July 30, with the hopes that he will just need the 15 days before his next appearance. "It doesnt appear to be a long-term thing, which is great news," Redmond said. "Its just a matter of him just getting himself feeling good, feeling healthy and getting back to playing catch and throwing again." Redmond added that catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been dealing with a sore back, giving more opportunities to Mathis. ON DECK Mike Leake (8-9, 3.53) will start for the Reds in Sundays series finale against Jacob Turner (4-6, 5.69). Leake is coming off a win against Arizona on July 29, pitching 7 2-3 scoreless innings and striking out eight. EOVALDI BOUNCES BACK Eovaldi came into the game with an 0-2 record and 9.92 ERA in his previous three starts, but was sharp throughout allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six. "You could tell he was on a mission," Redmond said. "He carved through their lineup pretty good." Eovaldi was pulled after giving up a lead-off single Santiago in the eighth. "I wanted to stay in there really, I was really frustrated that I had to come out, but its baseball and (Bryan) Morris has been awesome for us," Eovaldi said. "We were able to come back and get the win and thats all that matters." BAILEY IN GOOD FORM Bailey didnt feel sharp early, but he was able to get positive results--something hes done a lot of lately. Over his last six starts, Bailey is 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA. Like Eovaldi, he would have liked to have gone further in the game. "I would like to have gone eight (innings) but my .110 batting average just does not play very well."
