NEW YORK, N.Y. - Kevin Durant scored 29 points, Russell Westbrook had a triple-double by the middle of the third quarter, and the Oklahoma City Thunder rolled to a 123-94 victory Wednesday over the New York Knicks, who played without Carmelo Anthony. The Durant-Anthony showdown between the NBAs top two scorers was cancelled because of Anthonys sprained left ankle, so the Thunder had the Christmas spotlight all to themselves while winning for the 10th time in 11 games. Westbrook finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in his first triple-double of the season and seventh of his career. Serge Ibaka added 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Amare Stoudemire scored a season-high 22 points, and Tim Hardaway Jr. had 21 for the Knicks, who also were missing starting point guard Raymond Felton. J.R. Smith scored 20 points, but shot 8 for 22 and was booed when he left the court for good. Anthony was forced to sit out for the first time this season. The Knicks were never really in it without him and may not have had a chance with him the way the Thunder played. The Knicks not only had trouble with the Thunder, but also with the special edition sleeved jerseys NBA teams are wearing on Christmas. Beno Udrih hit the side of the backboard on two shot attempts in the first half, tugging on his sleeve after the second as if blaming his struggles on his equipment. Oklahoma City had a much easier time in the uniforms. Coach Scott Brooks said before the game the Thunder hadnt had a formal practice in them, but players had shot around the last few days in the jerseys that featured a giant logo in the middle of the chest and jersey numbers on the left sleeve. "They look great. Hopefully, we play well in them," Brooks said. They played superbly. Coming off a 104-98 loss to Toronto on Sunday that ended a nine-game winning streak and was their first setback at home this season, they shot 54 per cent and got 18 points from Reggie Jackson. Durant made all five shots in the first quarter, with the Thunder leading 35-29 after shooting 70 per cent. Jackson and Durant made 3-pointers to start the second, making Oklahoma City 16 of 22. Ibaka did most of the work in an 8-2 spurt midway through the period that extended the lead to 52-35, and the Thunder led 60-46 at halftime. They kept up the pressure in the third, Durant and Westbrook taking turns being unguardable on the perimeter, and Oklahoma City went on to its sixth straight road victory. Anthony was hurt Monday night in a victory at Orlando, saying afterward he hoped to play Wednesday. But he looked glum and wasnt walking particularly well by the locker room area after getting treatment and testing the ankle, and the Knicks announced he wouldnt be in uniform about 50 minutes before the start. He sat on the bench wearing a brown sports jacket, getting up slowly during timeouts whenever the Knicks called them in a futile attempt to stop the Thunders onslaught. Anthony averaged 28.7 points last season, ending Durants three-year reign as scoring champion, but Durant has moved right back to the top this season with 28.1 to Anthonys 26.3. The Knicks fell to 0-7 in orange uniforms this season. Notes: Chris Smith, J.R.s brother, made his NBA debut with a scoreless minute at the end. ... Kenyon Martin returned to the Knicks after missing five games with a strained left abdominal muscle. ... Knicks coach Mike Woodson said he thought Felton (strained right groin) would see more doctors Thursday, perhaps getting a better idea how long he would be out. The Knicks were also without Metta World Peace, who has been battling a sore left knee. Lenny Dykstra Jersey .com) - The Carolina Panthers won for the first time in seven games last week, were without Cam Newton due to a car accident this week, but somehow sit atop the much-maligned NFC South. Mike Piazza Jersey . Yup, he definitely needed this one. Craig homered twice and had three RBIs Wednesday night to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Craig went 4 for 5 and Yadier Molina added three hits for the Cardinals, who salvaged the final game of a three-game set in hopes of staying within shouting distance of front-running Milwaukee in the NL Central. http://www.metsbaseballauthentic.com/tim-tebow-mets-jersey/. With one penalty, Fourcade finished in 24 minutes, 58.2 seconds, just nine-tenths of a second ahead of Timofey Lapshin, who shot clean in the cold. Jose Reyes Jersey . -- Down to 10 men and behind on the scoreboard, Toronto FC displayed its perseverance. Wilmer Flores Jersey . You can, too, Clay Buchholz, if we ignore the sixth inning of Game 2. Doug Fister and Jake Peavy, youre up next in Game 4 and theres a lot to live up to.NEW YORK -- Finally, somebody stopped Kevin Durant: his coach. Not that Durant cared. The only streak he cares about is still intact. Durants 30-point run ended at 12 games when he scored 26 in just 30 minutes, but the Oklahoma City Thunder won their 10th in a row with a 120-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night. "Thats the most important streak," Durant said. Serge Ibaka made all 12 shots and added 25 points and nine rebounds for the Thunder, who were so good that Durant sat the entire fourth quarter, the only way to slow him down right now. Durant came out for good with 1:15 left in the third. Coach Scott Brooks didnt bother asking the NBAs leading scorer if he wanted to keep playing to extend the streak, saying he knew what the answer would be. "If he cared about the streak, he shouldve never missed the two shots. Thats on him. Cant blame it on me," Brooks said. Durant finished 10 of 12 from the field, though his scoring average during his sensational January dropped from 36.6 to 35.9. He had been streaking toward Tracy McGrady, who had the last longer streak when he scored 30 in 14 in a row in 2003. "The streak was good while it lasted, but thats the least of my concerns," Durant said. "Its easy for me to try to force it to keep the streak alive, but we needed this win because they beat us last time." Reggie Jackson and Thabo Sefolosha scored 14 for the Thunder, on their longest winning streak since a 12-game run early in the 2012-13 season. They dominated the final three quarters in their 112-95 victory at Miami and picked up right where they left off in this one before a sellout crowd of 17,732 that included former President Bill Clinton. They call this a landslide in his field. Oklahoma City shot 63.6 per cent (49 of 77), highest in the league this season, and outrebounded Brooklyn 41-17. The Nets rebound total was the lowest in NBA history. Shaun Livingston scored 16 points while drawing the impossible assignment of defending Durant for the Nets, who dropped their final two games to finish 10-3 in January. "I mean, man, hes shooting thee ball, its tough," Livingston said.dddddddddddd"Its one of those where youve got to tip your hat to him." Oklahoma City closed the first quarter with the final 13 points, eight from Ibaka and the rest from Durant, for a 30-16 lead. An 11-0 spurt in the second -- with just two points from Durant and Ibaka -- extended it to 45-24, and one more surge late in the period put it away. The Nets started the month by holding Durant to 24 points while rallying from 16 down in a 95-93 victory at Oklahoma City, but Brooklyn was never in this game. "I said it before the game. Everybody is talking about Durant scoring 30 points, but its the rest of the guys that are playing at a high level," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "If you look at Ibaka, hes 12 for 12. So again, it goes back to what I said before the game, its just not all Durant. He has guys on his team that have stepped up and been playing at a high level." Durant had a jumper and 3-pointer around Jacksons three-point play to extend it to 28, and Durant made a turnaround jumper and another 3-pointer on consecutive possessions late in the half for a 61-30 cushion. Ibaka capped his perfect half with a follow dunk and Oklahoma City led 63-35 at the break. But Durant got only three shots in the second half, making two on alley-oops, before taking a seat for good to get a little extra rest before returning to his hometown Saturday to face Washington. The Nets played without versatile forward Andrei Kirilenko, who wouldve been one of their best hopes of defending Durant, because of strained right calf. Backup centre Andray Blatche left in the second half with a bruised left hip. Deron Williams had 14 points off the bench for the Nets and rookie Mason Plumlee scored 13. Kevin Garnett missed all four shots and was scoreless with one rebound in 12 minutes. NOTES: The Thunder have won six straight road games. ... The Nets visit Indiana on Saturday, facing both conference leaders in a 24-hour span. ... Marquis Teague, acquired from Chicago on Jan. 21, made his Nets debut in the fourth quarter and scored seven points. Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - DeMarre Carroll scored a career-high 25 points and the Atlanta Hawks closed out a tough five-game stretch with their fifth straight win, rallying from 13 down in the second half to beat the Los Angeles Clippers 107-104 on Tuesday night. Al Horford added 20 points and Paul Millsap scored 17 for the Hawks, who took the lead for good on Kyle Korvers 3-pointer a minute into the fourth quarter and held on down the stretch to post their 14th win in 15 games. Blake Griffin scored 21 points to lead Los Angeles, but missed an off-balance 3-pointer as time expired after the Clippers bumbled an inbounds pass with 6.4 seconds remaining. DeAndre Jordan had 15 points and 22 rebounds in the loss, the Clippers fifth in their last eight games. Carroll scored 10 of his 25 points in the third quarter to help pull Atlanta out of its 13-point hole. They played well. They came back, said Clippers coach Doc Rivers. We had to sub at some point. ... They made more plays. The Hawks have beaten five winning teams on their current streak, including the last four while leading scorer Jeff Teague has battled a strained left hamstring. Teague returned Tuesday following a three-game absence but came off the bench, scoring nine points in 24 minutes. Atlantas 14-1 stretch started almost a month ago, on Nov. 28, and has the Hawks on top of the Southeast Division. They have won eight in a row at home. We need to get better defensively, but I think in these last couple of weeks weve shown improvement, said Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. We have guys who step up every night and make big plays. But weve got a lot of work left and a long way to go. J.J. Redick pump-faked Horford behind the 3-point line and leaned into him to draw a foul with 15.2 seconds left and a chance to trim LAs lead to one. But he missed the first of the three free throws. Matt Barnes tied up Korver near the baseline after the inbounds pass to force a jump ball, which Korver won. After Horford made one of two free throws to extend Atlantas lead to three, he got a hand on LAs inbounds pass at the other end. Chris Paul saved the ball for the Clippers, but Griffins desperation shot from near the right sideline hit off the backboard and the rim as time ran out. Earlier, Griffin scored nine points in the first quarter for Los Angeles, but the Hawks shot better than 56 percent for a 31-25 lead going into the second. The Clippers used a 25-5 run in the second quarter to turn a 10-point deficit into a 10-point lead. Jamal Crawford scored eight points early in the flurry and Jordan added six, helping the Clippers to a 55-45 advantage. They led 57-50 at halftime. Game Notes Korver scored 14 ... Paul had 19 points and seven assists and Redick and Crawford each scored 18 for LA ... The Clippers start a nine-game homestand on Christmas against Golden State ... Hes got a more permanent gig now. Cundiff reached agreement with Cleveland on Tuesday, filling an unexpected hole the Browns created with less than a week left before their season opener against the Miami Dolphins. Its Cundiffs second stint with the Browns. He was with the club in 2009, when he made all six of his field-goal attempts while filling in for Phil Dawson, who was sidelined with a calf injury. Cundiff replaces the dependable Dawson, the best field-goal kicker in Browns history and second-leading career scorer who didnt re-sign after last season and is now with San Francisco. The 33-year-old Cundiff auditioned Tuesday for the Browns along with Giorgio Tavecchio, who was released by Green Bay last week. The Browns have been looking for a kicker since terminating veteran Shayne Grahams contract and releasing rookie Brandon Bogotay last weekend as they cut their roster to 53. To open a roster spot for Cundiff, the Browns placed offensive guard Jason Pinkston on the short-term injured reserve list. Pinkston sustained a high ankle sprain on Aug. 15 against Detroit and is still in a walking boot. Hes eligible to return to practice following Clevelands Oct. 20 game against Green Bay and is eligible to play in the Nov. 3 game against Baltimore. Four years ago, Cundiff picked up the slack when Dawson was hurt. He appeared in five games and made the winning field goall against Buffalo in Week 5 as the Browns beat the Bills 6-3.dddddddddddd Cundiff, who has appeared in 106 career NFL games for five teams, made the Pro Bowl with Baltimore in 2010. He made 26 of 29 field goals and led the league with 40 touchbacks that season. He wasnt as consistent the following years, and is perhaps best remembered for missing a potential game-tying 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the 2012 AFC Championship against New England. Cundiff was released by the Ravens in 2012 and kicked in five games for Washington last season, making 7 of 12 field-goal tries. He went to training camp with the New York Jets this summer and made all three of his field goals during the exhibition season but was released on Aug. 28. Cundiff has connected on 139 of 184 (75.5 per cent) career field-goal attempts. The Browns relied heavily last season on Dawson, who made 29 of 31 kicks, including all seven from beyond 50 yards. Cleveland had planned to try out veteran Dan Carpenter, but he chose to sign with the Buffalo Bills after rookie kicker Dustin Hopkins was injured in practice on Monday. Graham and Bogotay split the kicking duties throughout camp and the preseason, and it was assumed one of them would win the job. But coach Rob Chudzinski said the Browns were not satisfied with their performances -- Bogotay also had a groin injury -- and the team opted to look elsewhere despite the opener being just a few days away. Receiver Jamel Richardsons move to Toronto may have hit a stumbling block. Acording to Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, sources say Richardson failed his physical with the Argonauts on Wednesday. Ricahrdson was released by the Montreal Alouettes last week after it was expected he would miss half the season while he continues to recover from a knee injury suffered last year. A 10-year veteran, Richardson surpassed 1,000 yards receiving in five of his six seasons in Montreal. The 32-year-old had just 18 catches for 197 yards last season but missed 13 games due to injury. DALLAS -- Balance paid off in different ways for the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night in a 111-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. First, there was the balance of having six players score in double figures, led by Dirk Nowitzkis 24 points. There was also the balance of scoring 40 points, in 46 attempts, from the free throw line on a night when Dallas shot just 40 per cent from the field. And there was the balance of playing at both ends of the court. Shawn Marion did all that as well as anyone Saturday. His double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds -- six offensive -- included making 9 of 10 free throws. His two blocked shots were a game high. "We can score the ball like we should, but weve got to play defence too," Marion said. "We did that early and took them out of their rhythm." The 6-foot-7 Marion drew the assignment of covering 6-1 point guard Mike Conley in the first half. Conley made just 2 of 6 field goal attempts and scored eight points in the first half. "(Marion) loves taking on a challenge," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Any time you take Conley out of a game, thats important. "I can think of less than five, maybe six guys that can guard a guy like Conley for big minutes and then guard a guy like Zach Randolph and then any other kind of guy in between." Carlisle then invoked the names of LeBron James and Hall of Famers Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. "Ive heard that before," Marion said with a shrug. "Especially Pippen. Ive been compared to him since I came in. I want to be the best I can." Dallas missed its first seven shots before Nowitzki banked in a 3-pointer 2:20 into the game. The Mavericks went on a 13-0 run over 2 1/2 minutes to take a 16-6 lead they never lost. Memphis came no closer than four points, in the third quarter. Conley said, "We dug ourselves into a hole early, and we cant start games that way. You cant play from behind against good teams." One night after trailing by 16 points at the end of the first quarter in a loss at Houston, Dallas bounced back with its own 16-point lead over the Grizzlies, 32-16 after the first 12 minutes. Nowitzki said, "We heard about it from Coach all day, how we gave up 40 points in the first quarter (Friday), so that was a big emphasis coming in. We knew they had a tough game yesterday; they won in overtime." Dallas lead reached 47-26 before Memphis outscored the Mavericks 17-2 to get within 49-43 at halftime.dddddddddddd Conley finished with 24 points, while Marc Gasol scored 23 and Randolph had 21 points and 14 rebounds. For Dallas, Monta Ellis had 18 points. Jose Calderon broke out of a shooting slump with 15 points, Samuel Dalembert didnt miss a shot in scoring 14 and Vince Carter added 11 in a reserve role. Calderon had made just 1 of 15 shots from the field in the first two games. Last seasons NBA leader in 3-point percentage had been 1 for 8 from beyond the arc before going 3 for 7 on Saturday. Calderon, who finished 4 for 11 overall from the field, received a pre-game vote of confidence from owner Mark Cuban. "Thats not something thats going to stay," he said. "The shots that were going in his entire career arent going in. If hes 0 for 73 after 12 games, then well talk about it." Calderon clearly agreed. "Its not something you just lose one day," he said. "Youve been doing it for so long, youre going to have games like the ball dont want to go in, but youve got to keep shooting so its nothing else youve got to worry about." Memphis outrebounded Dallas 18-9 in the third quarter but gave away most of that advantage by committing eight turnovers to the Mavericks three. "We fought back into the game," Gasol said. "We just didnt convert enough baskets to get to a tie game or ahead. Carters three-point play with 5 seconds to play in the quarter boosted Dallas lead to 73-63. Consecutive steals leading to dunks by Ellis and Marion helped the Mavericks rebuild the lead. "The turnovers - 18 - thats like 4 too many," Grizzlies head coach David Joerger said. "Because youre down 10 (points), OK, you got to 7 and then you make a mistake and it bounces back to 11 or 12." Memphis finished just 3 for 16 (19 per cent) from 3-point range. NOTES: Dallas entered the game 52-18 all-time against Memphis, but the Grizzlies had won the previous three meetings and 11 of the last 17. . Dallas will play back-to-back games on all five Fridays and Saturdays in November. . Nowitzki had fouled out Friday for the first time since Nov. 4, 2009, at New Orleans. His seven successful free throws against Memphis gave him 6,186 for his career, moving him past Hall of Famer Bob Pettit for 14th place all-time ... Ellis third steal, in the third quarter, gave him 900 for his career .. Grizzlies G Tony Allen had his first scoreless game since April 20, 2012, at Charlotte. ere will be plenty of opportuniti

As we head into the final 10 days of the Blue Jays stay in Florida, there a couple of areas of concern. For one, the Jays havent scored more than five runs in 13-straight games. Of course, in the spring, the full everyday line-up is rarely together for more than a couple of games a week and even then, only a few innings at a time. Ryan Goins, for all he is capable of doing with the glove at second base, is only hitting .168 at last glance. Brandon Morrow, counted on so heavily this season, has had trouble commanding his four-seam fastball and has seemingly been dropped to the number-five slot in the rotatioon. On the flip side of that, Drew Hutchison has looked so good that he has been elavated to the number-two position in the rotation between R.A Dickey and lefty Mark Buehrle. Closer Casey Janssen started camp with should soreness, but he apppears to be doing well, throwing on the side and assures everyone he will be ready for opening day, despite not having seen any game action yet. J.A. Happs sore back seems to be coming around and hes been slotted in again as the number-four starter. The Jays Grapefruit Circuit record is only 7-10, but those records are rarely an indication of how a team is going to do in the regular season. A year ago, the Jays were 16-17 in Florida, yet only won 74 games for the 2013 campaign. St. Louis won the National League pennant after going just 16-15 in the spring. The Boston Red Sox played .500 ball in the sunny south at 17-17 in its first year under skipper John Farrell and then went on to beat the Cardinals in the World Series. In 2012, their final year with Farrell as manager, the Blue Jays went a scorching 24-7 in Dunedin, tops in the Majors, with a run differential of plus-79, yet they went on to stumble to just 73 wins during the season. The Detroit Tigers, though, werent too far behind the Jays at 20-8 and they made it to the World Series against San Francisco. The Giants had been 18-15 that spring and went on to win their second Fall Classic in three years. In 2011, the Kansas City Royals went 25-7, while the Seattle Mariners were 22-11. The Royals still havent made the playoffs since winning the World Series in 1985 and the Mariners havent made the playoffs in a dozen years. The most exciting aspect of spring training is watching the breakout performances of young players, as is with the case of the Jays Drew Hutchison this spring. The rest of it is just about hoping your team can open the season healthy and can come close to living up to expectations. - Injuries could play a part in the American League West race and, in turn, the Wild Card. Two of the Oakland As starters are down with arm troubles. Jarrod Parker has forearm stiffness, which can be a precursor to ellow trouble, and the 25-year-old righty already had one Tommy John surgery in 2009. A.J. Griffin has elbow issues as well, and will find out shortly if he needs Tommy John. Meanwhile, Seattles number-two starter Hisashi Iwakuma is recovering from a sprained ligament in the middle finger of his pitching hand and is iffy, at best, for the start of season. The Ms top pitching prospect, Taijuan Walker, has bursitis in his shoulder and will likely start the season in the minors on rehab. - Some of the National Leagues better clubs havent escaped the injury bug, either. Atlanta Braves starter Kris Medlen likely needs his seond Tommy John and Brandon Beachy could also be on track for his second. The Braves are also keeping a close watch on Mike Minors shoulder. Arizona Diamondbacks ace lefty Patrick Corbin is currently seeking a second opinion on whether or not he needs Tommy John. If that isnt bad enough for the D-Backs, the recently signed Bronson Arroyo, an iron man with the Cincinnati Reds, is out indefinately with a disc problem in his back. The Philadelphia Phllies, of course, lost Roy Halladay to retirement. Now their number-one starter, Cole Hamels, is dealing with left shoulder fatigue. Though hes starting to feel better throwing on the side, there is no guarantee Hamels will be ready for Opening Day. - I guess you could call it a Panama "Root Canal" for the New York Yankees over the weekend. While on their special goodwill tour of Panama, the home of their now retired future Hall of Fame closer, Mariano Rivera, the Yanks were no-hit by the Miami Marlins. It happened on Saturday at a jam-packed Rod Carew Stadium. The Marlins Brad Hand started off by throwing five perfect innings and striking out six. Steve Cishek came in for a scorless sixth-inning before A.J. Ramos blanked the Yankees in the next two innings and then Arquimedes Caminero finished off the no-no in the ninth. - We talked about a lot of the pitching injuries, but this one appears to be both serious and mysterious. Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias, a key pick-up from Boston in a three-way deal last season, has a severe case of shin splints in both legs caused by a problem with his feet. He could miss a large chunk of this season, maybe even the entire season, leaving Detroit without a legit number-one shortstop. - Its not exactly a Babe Ruth-ian differential, but the Baltimore Orioles Chris Davis had indeed a special season in the home run department last year. Daviss MLB-best 53 homers was nine better than American League runner-up Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers and 17 up on the National League co-leaders Pedro Alvarez of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the D-Backs Paul Goldschmidt at 36. The last time that happened was 2010, when the Blue Jays Jose Bautista slugged 54 homers, 15 more than AL runner-up Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox at 39 and 12 more than NL leader Albert Pujols, then of the Cardinals, at 42. Timofey Mozgov Jersey . Hawkins severely sprained his left ankle while making a diving catch during training camp and went on injured reserve with a designation he could return midway through the season. He was back at practice Wednesday. Timofey Mozgov Black Jersey . Perez, 35, posted a 1-2 record with a 3.69 earned-run average in 19 relief appearances last season. His season ended Aug. 9 due to a torn ligament in his left elbow. Perez joins infielder Andy LaRoche and catcher Mike Nickeas with minor-league agreements for 2014 that include invitations to attend spring training. http://www.nbanetsproshop.com/womens-dan...ketball-jersey/. According to a report from ESPN, sources said Manuels college coach Jimbo Fisher told teams he didnt think Manuel had the tools to be an NFL starter. DAngelo Russell Womens Jersey . ARCADIA, Calif. -- Fort Larned is back to defend his title in the $5 million Breeders Cup Classic, a race he led all the way in winning as a 9-1 long shot last year. He is one of a total of 172 horses, including nine defending champions, which were pre-entered Wednesday for the $27 million, 14-race Breeders Cup world championships at Santa Anita on Nov. 1-2. Thirteen horses were pre-entered for the 1 1/4-mile Classic, which will be shown live in prime time next Saturday on NBC. Trainers Bob Baffert, Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher have two each. Baffert has Game On Dude and Paynter; Mott has Flat Out and Ron the Greek; and Pletcher has Graydar and Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice. Besides Fort Larned, the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers in last years Classic will take another shot. "Looks like a heck of a field," Pletcher said. Defending Horse of the Year Wise Dan was pre-entered in the $2 million Mile. Royal Delta will defend her title in the $2 million Distaff, which has reverted to its original name after being called the Ladies Classic since 2008. Final entries and the post position draw will be Monday at Santa Anita, which is hosting the event for the seventh time. Twenty-four foreign horses were pre-entered. Chad Brown had a leading 11 horses pre-entered, including Last Gunfighter in the Classic. Pletcher was second with nine. Baffert had eight entries, followed by Doug ONeill with seven. Kentucky-based Ken and Sarah Ramsey had a leading seven pre-entries among owners. Co-owned by retired Dodgers and Yankees manager Joe Torre, Game On Dude is 5-0 this year, including Grade 1 wins in the Santa Anita Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic. Hell try to win the Classic for the first time after getting nipped at the wire by Drosselmeyer in 2011 and fading to seventh as the favourite last year. Mike Smith, the leading Breeders Cup jockey with 17 victories, will ride him. "Its a very competitive race," Baffert said. "Youve got to bring your A game and you need racing luck." Fort Larned has been inconsistent this year, with just two wins in five starts. He will try to join Tiznow in 2000-01 as the only two-time winners of the Classic. Mucho Macho Man is coming off a win in the Awesome Again Stakes last month at Santa Anita, where he has been training for the Breeders Cup after coming from the East Coast. Mott, who won the Classic with Cigar in 1995 and Drosselmeyer two years ago, will saddle Flat Out and Ron the Greek, who finished third and fourth, respectively, last year. Flat Out is coming off a third-place finish in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont last month. Sent off at 21-1 odds, Ron the Greek won the Gold Cup by 6 3/4 lengths in a stark reversal of his recent form. Two talented 3-year-old colts, Palace Malice and Will Take Charge, were set to run in the Classic. Palace Malice followed up his Belmont win with a victory in the Jim Dandy. Will Take Charge, trained by 78-year-old D. Wayne Lukas, won the Travers and the Pennsylvania Derby. Besides Palace Malice, Pletchers other entry is Graydar, winner of the Donn and New Orleans handicaps. Among the other pre-entries in the Classic are Juddmonte International winner Declaration of War, trained by Irishman Aidan OBrien, and Ireland-bred Planteur, third in the Dubai World Cup. There will be nine races Nov. 2, including the $2 million Juvenile. Pletcher, Baffert, ONeill and Dale Romans have two entries each. The two-day event will open Nov. 1 with five races, highlighted by the Distaff. Royal Delta will face five foes: Authenticity, Beholder, Close Hatches, Princess of Sylmar and Street Girl. A maximum of 14 are allowed in each race, except the Dirt Mile, which is capped at 12. BARCELONA, Spain -- Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez says he will not play again for the Spanish national team after a disappointing World Cup. The 34-year-old Xavi says "I have taken the decision to leave the selection. I think my time has ended." Xavi was Spains key playmaker in its unprecedented run of winning the World Cup in 2010 and two European championships in 2008 and 2012. But Spain flopped at this summers World Cup, losing its first two games and subsequently exiting the competition in the group stage. Xavi says being benched for that second match against Chile was key in his decision to retire from international duty. He says he will continue to play for Barcelona, with two years remaining on his current contract. Johnny Townsend Raiders Jersey . Johnny Townsend Jersey . 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell.TORONTO -- Toronto FC fans have likely seen the last of goalkeeper Julio Cesar. The Brazil No. 1 is headed to the World Cup and says Englands Queens Park Rangers want him back afterwards. QPRs loan deal with Toronto called for the 34-year-old Brazilian to stay with the MLS side through December but Toronto manager Ryan Nelsen says there is a "gentlemans agreement" that the English team can have him back sooner. Cesar, while confirming QPR wants him back in August, is unsure of where his future lies. "Im contracted still in England for a few more years," he said through an interpreter Tuesday in his final meeting with the Toronto media before leaving to join the Brazilian World Cup team. "Im contracted to return in August after the World Cup but I really dont know what the future holds after the World Cup so I cant give you a clear answer as to my fate after the tournament." Asked if he thought his time in Toronto was over, Cesar switched to English: "I dont know. Depends (what happens) after the World Cup." The Cesar move to Toronto was always a marriage of convenience, with a short time frame. QPR, relegated to the second-tier Championship, wanted to reduce its salary obligations and Cesar was a prime target, with weekly wages pegged at between 70,000 and 100,000 pounds (C$128,500 and $183,500). Manager Harry Redknapp, who inherited Cesar from Mark Hughes, made former England keeper Rob Green his No. 1 so Cesar needed a place to play to hold down his Brazil job. There were reported links to Italys Napoli and Brazils Gremio, but Nelsen, who is close to Cesars agent and knew the player from his own days at QPR, convinced him to come to Toronto. For TFC, the loan was like a fourth designated player. And Nelsen knew that Cesars influence on 25-year-old goalie Joe Bendik would last long after the Brazilian had departed. QPR meets Derby County in the Championship playoff final at Wembley this weekend with the winner moving up into the Premier League. But it seems unlikely that Cesar will finish out his contract in a QPR jersey whatever happens on the weekend. The English team, taking advantage of what hopefully will be a World Cup showcase in Brazil, is more likely to try to sell him and recoup some of its investment. MLS would be unlikely to take on the cost of Cesars contract and QPR would no doubt want more than it is likely getting under the current loan deal. Bendik, last years No. 1 in Toronto, will take over in goal for Toronto, either for the short-term or long. He has played the last three games for Toronto, two in the Amway Canadian Championship and in Saturdays 2-0 league win over the New York Red Bulls.dddddddddddd Cesar missed the weekend game with the flu. Nelsen, while keeping the door open, says hes "not sure" that Cesar will be back after the World Cup. "Julios been absolutely fantastic here and if he decides to stay, brilliant. But if he decides to move on and QPR decides to move on, then Toronto will move on -- having had a great experience of Julio with us." Privately, the club does not expect him back. Cesar played seven MLS games for Toronto this season going 3-4. With just nine goals conceded in eight league games, defence has been solid at Toronto. The offence has produced just nine goals, with Englands Jermain Defoe accounting for four. Speaking through an interpreter, Cesar said his time in Toronto has prepared him well for the World Cup. "I feel like Im a better person being here after three months and experiencing what the club has had to offer me and getting me ready for the World Cup," he said. Cesar says retirement after the World Cup is not in the cards. "Im still under contract for the next two years. So even if I win the World Cup, Im going to keep to my word, Im going to return to my club (QPR) and help them win championships. Thats what I was contracted to do, so thats what Im going to do." QPR could also read that as "Im going to collect what Im due." The veteran Brazilian has already won five Italian titles, seven Italian cups, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. He was named Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year twice and nominated for the Ballon dOr award in 2009. He has been a class act in Toronto, winning praise from coaches and teammates alike for his ability as a player and easy-going personality. "Its just a pleasure to have a man like that on the team," Nelsen said of Cesar. Bendik, who started the season as a backup to the Brazilian despite signing a new, enriched deal after winning the No. 1 job last year, has credited Cesar for making him a better goalie and calls him a friend. In other team news, Nelsen has injury concerns with Brazils Jackson (concussion) and fellow midfielder Jonathan Osorio (hamstring and hairline fracture in his hand). Jackson has yet to resume training and Osorio, who is due for a scan on his hamstring, seems doubtful for Friday nights game in Kansas City. Nelsen said the Canadian international may have come back too soon from a previous hamstring injury, which extended his absence from the lineup. "We have to be a bit careful with him," said Nelsen. He shot just 16.7 per cent from the field. Last season, Johnson played 26 games for Sacramento. He also has played for Chicago and Toronto in his four-year NBA career. Mike White Jersey . "Last year didnt go the way we wanted it to, but we need to look at what went well and what didnt go so well. Hopefully this year we will be better," Brendan Gallagher said after practice. This year, the Canadiens have a little more depth to work with by adding players like Daniel Briere, Dale Weise, Mike Weaver, Douglas Murray and arguably, the biggest addition to this playoff roster, Thomas Vanek, who the Canadiens were able to land at the trade deadline.Superman is a team-first super hero. When the Saskatchewan Roughriders Geroy Simon made CFL history, he actually looked disappointed. He didnt celebrate, he didnt sprint to the sideline and hand the ball to an equipment man for safe keeping, and he didnt get mobbed by teammates. The game wasnt stopped and there were no presentations made at centrefield. It was second down and ten when Simon caught the 1,018 catch of his illustrious career and he was tackled three yards short of a first down. At the time, the Riders were trailing and there was still work to do and the game was more important to the CFLs most productive receiver. That team-first, game-first attitude just may be the number one reason why Simon has been so consistent and so productive for so many years. When asked about how he felt when he made the historic catch he said, "during the game I was frustrated, we werent playing very well and we were trying to win a football game, the game was more important." The former Maryland Terrapin also did not want the game stopped and informed the CFL head office that he didnt want any presentation made while the game was going on, due to what he experienced last year when he became the all-time leader in receiving yards. While he was honoured in 2012, the league and at the time the BC Lions, wanted to recognize his achievement and stopped the game to allow Geroy to address the home crowd. But he felt the break in the action caused him to temporarily lose his focus. "Last year when they stopped the game I felt like it threw our team off a bit and after I had to take the mic and talk to the crowd I felt like it threw everything off for me." Simon went on to say, "I just want to play and win the game." Dont get Simon wrong; he is very proud of his accomplishments and appreciates the fact that the league, the teams he has played for, and the fans want to recognize those achievements. He just doesnt want it to effect his teams chance to win a football game. The debate as to who is the best receiver in CFL history will go on forever and will be tailored to a football fans personal bias. A Stamps fan may make the argument for Allen Pitts, while a Bomber fan will say that Milt Stegal is the best all timee.dddddddddddd What is not debatable, however, is who is the most productive receiver in the over 100 year history of the Canadian Football League. Simon is most proud of the fact that these records have also coincided with winning football teams. He is a two time Grey Cup Champion and said its the combination of the numbers and the wins that matters most. "The fact that I have put up numbers like that means I have been consistent and productive over all those years but it is the production plus the winning that is what really matters." There is one other mark on the horizon. With one more 100 yard game, Simon will tie Allen Pitts who currently holds the league record with 64 in his career. But when asked about yet another record, Simon would not waiver from his team-first approach when he said, "again it means I have produced but what is most important to me is that if I get 100 yards receiving our team probably has a better chance to win and that is what I care about." Friday night, Geroy Simons new team - the Saskatchewan Roughriders - are in Vancouver to take on the Lions in a game that has huge playoff implications in the west and when it comes to home field advantage in the postseason. The Lions have said that they will recognize Simons record with a mention on the big screen. Even though the majority of Geroys catches were made as a member of the BC Lions, there will be no plaque presentation or special ceremony. The Lions have said he is a Rider now and they will acknowledge the accomplishment and move on because their focus is the game and Geroy now plays for the enemy. Simon wouldnt want it any other way. When he heard how the Lions are going to handle the CFL record set by their former receiver, his response was again as consistent as he was as a player. "It is nice that they will mention it but to be honest it wouldnt bother me at all if they did nothing. This is a huge game for us and we need a win; that is all Im thinking about." It is a big game. Hosts England will face Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh in their group for next years ICC Champions Trophy. The tournament schedule was unveiled at The Kia Oval on Wednesday, precisely one year before the opening fixture at the home of Surrey, which pits England against Bangladesh. The eight-team event will take place over nearly three weeks, finishing on June 18 with the final, which also takes place at The Kia Oval. Eoin Morgans England and Australia will meet in the Champions Trophy next year Group B features India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka - current Twenty20 world champions West Indies failed to qualify for the event.Englands clash with Australia will be their last game in the group stages, taking place on June 10 at Edgbaston, and they face New Zealand in Cardiff four days earlier. The mouth-watering clash between India and Pakistan will also be hosted at Edgbaston on June 4 - it will be both sides first game in the tournament. India and Pakistan will come up against one another at Edgbaston next June One-day captain Eoin Morgan is keen to first claim revenge on Bangladesh, who beat England at the World Cup in Australia last year, when the 50-over team was at just about its lowest ebb.Since then, England have been narrowly beaten in one-day series by Australia and South Africa, beaten Pakistan and made it to the World Twenty20 final. He told Sky Sports News HQ: That game sits pretty close in my memory. It was a day when they played better than us. Morgan feels England have built momentum since their World Cup disappointment This tournament will mark two years since the squad has been together and, looking forward to the 2019 World Cup, its a very important step for us.We take a huge amount of confidence into the summer. The experience within itself creates a lot of belief within the side and I think that is very important for a young side.We have an incredible amount of talent as we have seen over the last 12 months or so. Weve seen some young guns come out and perform at their best, and thats been a huge testament to the culture we have created. ICC chief David Richardson feels the United Kingdom is an ideal host for big cricket events The United Kingdom will host three major events before the end of the decade, with the Champions Trophy followed straight after by the Womens World Cup, and then the next World Cup in 2019.And ICC chief executive David Richardson feels England and Wales are ideal hosts for such events.Richardson added: The beauty of playing events in the United Kingdom is the cultural diversity that does exist, and for some [visiting] teams its almost like they are playing at home. Surreys Kia Oval will host the Champions Trophy final That goes for all the teams, there are lots of South Africans here, New Zealanders and Australians, and of course people from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The ICC tournaments provide some much needed context. Its great to win a series against a particular team, but in the bigger scheme of things, series by series they get lost in the wash. For an ICC event, its a bit like winning The Masters or Wimbledon. The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 is not just an ODI competition, it carries a great deal of value since it is being played just three months before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 qualification cut-off date. The mood in Seattle was electrified as the parade featuring the NFL champions began near the Space Needle and made its way to CenturyLink Field, the home of the team. At a ceremony inside the stadium, the team thanked its loyal followers -- the 12th Man -- capping a day of boisterous celebration that drew an estimated 700,000 revelers to Seattle.Denny Morrison is having the Olympics of a lifetime. Three days after taking silver in the mens 1,000-metre long track speed skating event at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Morrison has added a bronze to his cabinet, this time in the 1,500 metres on Saturday. "Its been a long road with a lot of persistence and its finally paid off," an elated Morrison told CBC Sports after the race. Morrison, skating 15th of 20 pairs, capitalized on a strong opening lap to lay down a time of one minute, 45.22 seconds, and was the leader until Polands Zbigniew Brodka topped it for gold in 1:45.00. "What Ive found [in 1,500-metre races] is that I cant go out slow and conservative and try to beat the other guys who finish strong, I have to go out my way – go out fast, and just hang on," Morrison said. "And I was able to hang on just enough." There was more drama to come in the final pairing. Dutch skater Koen Verweij finished in a dead heat with Brodka, crossing the line in 1:45.00 as well. When the times were adjusted, Brodka ended up with the gold medal, a mere three thousandths of a second ahead. But it also meant that Morrison had his medal, after an agonizing wait to see if any of the 10 skaters after him could take his place on the podium. "It is [excruciating], you already want to puke," he said. "Youre already so tired and hurting, but man does it feel good to win [a medal]." Mathieu Giroux of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Que., finished in 19th in 1:47.65. Lukas Makowsky of Regina placed 28th in a time of 11:48.dddddddddddd.51. Teenager Vincent de Haitre of Cumberland, Ont., was 33rd in 1:49.42. Morrisons bronze puts Canadas medal count at 12, with four gold, five silver, and three bronze. Morrison, Giroux and Makowsky are expected to compete in the team pursuit event next week, as they attempt to defend their gold medal from the Vancouver Olympics. Morrisons efforts have been one of the highlights of the Olympics so far for Canada. Not even scheduled to compete in the 1,000-metres after falling in the event at the Canadian trials, Morrison was given a spot in the race thanks to teammate Gilmore Junio, who gave up his. The Fort St. John, B.C., native fully took advantage of the opportunity, taking silver in the 1,000 metres behind Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands. Defending Olympic champion Mark Tuitert of the Netherlands finished fifth. American Shani Davis continued his disappointing 2014 Olympic campaign with an 11th-place finish. Canada now has two medals in long track, both from Morrison. The Dutch team has dominated the proceedings at Adler Arena, taking four gold and 13 medals so far in only seven races, matching the record set by East Germany in the 1988 Games in Calgary. With five long track events still remaining, the Netherlands will likely surpass that mark in the coming days. To compare, the other nations have eight long track medals combined. Its a big turnaround for the Dutch team from their Vancouver effort in long track, where it finished well below expectations with three gold and only seven medals total. Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Vic Braden, a former tennis player who became one of the nations top tennis instructors, died from complications of congestive heart failure at the age of 85. He died Monday at his home in Trabuco Canyon in Orange County, according to his wife of 43 years, Melody Braden. Braden, who played in the late 1940s and early 50s, began playing tennis in grade school in his hometown of Monroe, Michigan and captured the Class A state singles title in high school in 1946 and 47. The 5-foot-6 Braden was a 1951 graduate of Kalamazoo College in Michigan, where he was captain of the tennis team and later inducted into the schools athletic hall of fame. He was one of the top players on teams that won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in each of his four years. Braden turned pro after college at a time when there were only a few professional tennis tournaments. He eventually joined the legendary Jack Kramer on Kramers fledgling pro tour. Among those Braden played with were Jimmy Evert, the father of Hall-of-Famer Chris Evert, and George Richey, the father of future pros Cliff and Nancy Richey. Rest in Peace, Vic Braden., Chris Evert wrote on her Twitter account. Innovative, cutting edge kind of guy. Will miss his enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. Hell be greatly missed. Braden and Kramer later co-founded the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, California, where future Hall-of-Famer Tracy Austin learned the game as a child. So sad to hear of the passing of tennis coach Vic Braden, a pioneer, innovator, & true legend in our sport! Austin tweeted. Braden was known for his innovative teaching style, and his application of technology to the basics of tennis instruction. He authored several books and articles on tennis instruction and was a licensed psychologist in California. Tennis has lost a treasure, Billie Jean King wrote on Twitter. he was always on the cutting edge of science in tennis & is an all-time great in our industry. Braden is also survived by children Kory Braden-Hittelman, Kristen Paul, Troy Davis and Shawn Davis, and four grandchildren. His daughter, Kelly, died 12 years ago from complications of lupus. Bradens body has been donated to the University of California, Irvine, for research purposes. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Jake Dotchin Jersey . Coming off a 6-0 drubbing at Chelsea on Saturday, Arsenal endured another demoralizing result after rallying for a 2-1 lead -- only to concede a fluke equalizer.SOCHI, Russia -- Martin St. Louis is going to get a chance to represent his country at the Winter Olympics after all. Hockey Canada announced today that the 38-year-old Tampa Bay forward will replace injured Lightning teammate Steven Stamkos on Canadas mens hockey team at the Sochi Olympics. "I heard from Stammer that he wasnt going to go, so I knew it was a possibility," St. Louis told reporters in Tampa on Thursday. "So I guess I was prepared for it." St. Louis said he felt bad for Stamkos, who tried hard to come back from a broken right tibia he suffered in a Nov. 11 NHL game before being ruled out of Olympic competition by the Lightnings medical staff on Wednesday. "I think weve got to understand how hard hes tried and worked to put himself in the position hes in and give himself a chance," St. Louis said. "Obviously hes disappointed and Im disappointed for him. Stammers a true professional and hes done everything he can this past month to get back to the lightning first and hopefully to Team Canada." St. Louis was considered one of Canadas most surprising snubs when Canadas team was first announced, along with Philadelphia forward Claude Giroux and Pittsburgh forward James Neal. The Laval, Que., native led the league in points in the 2012-13 shortened season with 17 goals and 43 assists in 48 games. He is having another strong campaign in 2013-14 with 54 points (25 goals, 29 assists) in 56 games, good for 11th in the league. "I dont see this as Marty replacing me, I see it as Marty deserving a spot on this team and going over and hopefully bringing back a gold medal," said Stamkos in the same news conference. St. Louis has won two World Championsship silver medals for Canada over his career.dddddddddddd He played in the 2006 Turin Olympics, scoring two goals and an assist in Canadas disappointing seventh-place finish. St. Louis went on a 10-game point streak (eight goals, six assists) for the Lightning after first being left off Canadas team, announced on Jan. 7. He said the snub had nothing to do with his increased production, but his play of late might have given him the edge over Giroux and Neal. "I dont think its motivation. Ive been motivated the past four years ... the past 10 years. If youre not motivated, youre not even considered for these things. His speed could be a benefit to Canada, which has struggled in the Olympics when playing on the larger international ice surface. Canada won gold in Salt Lake City in 2002 and in Vancouver in 2010 playing in NHL-style arenas, but was left off the podium in Nagano, Japan in 1998 and Turin, Italy in 2006. "Obviously its a bigger ice surface. It think my quickness, my speed ... thats what Im going to rely on," St. Louis said. "Its a different game, but I think whatever game plan we come up with, its going to be well thought-out." Stamkos is confident that his teammate can fill any position on Team Canada. "Hes going to go over there and play whatever role possible. I personally think hes going to play a big role," said Stamkos. "The character that he has, the way hes played in big-game situations in the past. I mean, hes won individual awards, hes won the team championships, hes been in those situations. "Its not like its a young guy thats never been in these situations before filling in for someone. This is a guy who can step in and play any role asked." CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Wendell Scott earned a second NASCAR first on Wednesday: He became the first African-American driver to be elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The late driver from Virginia was among the latest group of five — all drivers, another first — voted in the hall on Wednesday. Scott joins popular NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, two-time series champ Joe Weatherly, 1960 champion Rex White and 26-time race winner Fred Lorenzen. Scott competed in NASCARs top series from 1961-73. He won his only race at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1963, taking the checkered flag in the 100-mile feature after starting 15th. Scott started 495 Sprint Cup events and had a 147 top 10 finishes. "I just felt like that his time was coming and he would say that too, one day its going to happen," said Scotts son, Franklin. When Scotts name was called there were enthusiastic shouts and applause from fans, officials and family members gathered at the NASCAR Hall of Fame rotunda. He was the second-leading vote getter behind Elliott from a 54-member panel, including current Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. Scott, who died in 1990, was the first African-American driver to race fulltime in NASCARs top series. He had won more than 100 races at local tracks before stepping up to race against NASCARs best. Among Scotts legacy to the sport is the sports Drive for Diversity initiative, one of the top youth development programs for multicultural and female drivers across the motorsports industry thats been in place since 2004. "The next inductee gives me additional pride," NASCAR chairman Brian France said in introducing Scott, "Because he undoubted scaled and climbed the highest mountain." Scotts story was loosely portrayed in the 1977 movie, "Greased Lightning," where Richard Pryor starred as Scott, the one-time taxi driver from Danville, Virginia. "He said one day they are going to write a book about me," Franklin Scott said of his father. "He had great determination. He was a great ambassador for the sport." Elliott was the 1988 Sprint Cup champion and his 44 race victories rank 16th in NASCAR history. The driver nicknamed "Awesome Bill From Dawsonville" was also the first to win the Winston Million bonus in 1985 for capturing three of NASCAR crown jewel races. When Elliotts name was called, racer son Chase patted him on the shoulder. "This is at the top of everything Ive ever done and accomplished," he said. "This is the pinnacle." Elliott said he was a bit surprised when he was called first and thanked those who helped him achieve what he had in racing. "You look at all of the people to be nominated and you try to put things into perspective. And bam, you are the first name announced and its like, holy mackerel what just happened," he said. Modified champion Jerry Cook was sixth, car owner Robert Yates seventh and the late driver and announcer Benny Parsons eighth. The five inductees will be enshrined at ceremonies on January 30th. Hall of Famer Richard Petty, among the voters, said there were few clear cut people on the list of 20. "I had my thoughts and others had theirs, but nobody said this is the guy that needs to get in," Petty said. "That was different than past years." Weatherly, who died in 1964, won 25 races in NASCARs premiere series including those back-to-back championships in 1962 and 1963. White raced from 1956-64, winning 28 times in 233 events including six races during his championship season in 1960. Lorenzen started as a mechanic in NASCAR in 1960, but became a driver by the end of the year. He won the first three of his 26 races the next season. In 1963, Lorenzen had a stretch of dominance like few others when he won eight of 16 races entered. At one point, he led 1,679 of the possible 1,953 laps run. Series matriarch Anne Bledsoe France was honoured with the inaugural Landmark Award. She was the wife of NASCAR founding father, Bill France, and grandmother of current CEO and chairman Brian France. "I have had no discussions with Chad Johnson or his representation," Popp said Friday in an email. Carter Rowney Jersey . -- So much for concern that running back Marshawn Lynch would be absent from the Seattle Seahawks minicamp.HOUSTON -- Chris Borland made one more big play to convince the 49ers he should be in the mix of linebackers to replace injured NaVorro Bowman. Borland, a third-round pick from Wisconsin, returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown, third-string quarterback Josh Johnson threw three TD passes and San Francisco beat the Houston Texans 40-13 on Thursday night. Bowman is expected to miss at least half the season as he recovers from a devastating left knee injury sustained in the NFC championship game loss to the rival Seahawks. Michael Wilhoite is listed as the starter, but defensive co-ordinator Vic Fangio said younger players would get a "good, healthy dose of snaps" Thursday night to move up the depth chart. Borland also had a team-high six tackles. "I think I had one of my better games, but I still made some mistakes I need to fix," Borland said. "Thats kind of been the story this preseason, so I have some things to improve on, but it could help." Colin Kaepernick did not play for the 49ers. Blaine Gabbert played the first half and went 4 for 11 for 60 yards before Johnson took over. Coach Jim Harbaugh had said earlier in the week that he planned to play Kaepernick. He decided Wednesday that he would rest Kaepernick and the rest of his starters. "Some of the starters didnt get to play and that was a decision to keep them from that kind of fun," Harbaugh said. "I feel bad for that, for them, but some of our other guys got a chance to play the best game of their career. Thats really exciting for me." Houston quarterbacks Case Keenum and Tom Savage both threw interceptions as they compete for the backup job behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. Keenum went 8 for 17 for 70 yards and Savage went 8 for 12 for 43 yards. Keenum got the start and misfired on five of his first seven passes. He got the Texans moving on his third series, completing three passes to DeVier Posey. Rookie Chris Boswell finished the drive with a 41-yard field goal. Boswell is competing with Randy Bullock for Houstons kicking duties. Gabbert started 1 for 4 and was sacked by outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus on the second-to-lastt play of the first quarter.dddddddddddd Mercilus, a late first-round pick in 2012 now backing up Jadeveon Clowney, tackled LaMichael James behind the line on the next play. Savage started the second quarter for Houston and completed his first six throws. His first miss was a third-down toss to Mike Thomas and Bullock kicked a 52-yard field goal for a 6-0 lead. Gabbert completed a 32-yard pass to Derek Carrier to finally kick-start the 49ers and tossed a 14-yard TD pass to Asante Cleveland with 1:18 left in the half. Harbaugh said Gabbert hurt his shoulder in the first half and underwent an X-ray. Keenum returned with 1:12 left in the half and the ball at the Houston 19. He threw behind Posey and Chris Cook intercepted and returned it to the Houston 13. Johnson threw a touchdown pass to Bruce Ellington on the next play. Phil Dawson kicked a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter. Borland then picked off Savages next throw, stepping in front of tight end Ryan Griffin and racing to the end zone. "Its just anticipation," Savage said. "Ive just got to get the ball out quicker. I think it was the right read. It was just the ball has got to be out and thats something I can definitely improve on." Texans rookie Andre Hal intercepted Johnsons pass and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter. Johnson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Nelson and Kassim Osgood blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter. Nose tackle Ian Williams, centre Daniel Kilgore and right guard Joe Looney were the only San Francisco first-teamers to start. Wilhoite and fullback Bruce Miller were the only other regular starters who played. Wilhoite only played on special teams. Carrier left the game with a hamstring injury. The Chicago Blackhawks took a 2-1 lead into the third period, fell behind and rallied to win, all in less than 11 minutes of game action, earning a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings in Game Six, setting up a Game Seven in Chicago for all of the proverbial Western Conference marbles. Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane came up big when it counted, tallying two goals and an assist. He scored the game-winner with 4:45 remaining in the third period, stopping on the right hashmarks, carrying the puck up through the top of the Kings zone, then firing a wrist shot from the top of the circles past Jonathan Quick, who had his view obstructed by Andrew Shaw. Kane, who had no points in the first three games of the series, now has eight points in the last three games; his 18 points lead the Blackhawks and is tied with Kings LW Marian Gaborik for third in the playoffs. Kanes one assist was on Duncan Keiths game-tying goal, with 8:26 remaining. Keith had no points and one shot on goal in the previous three games. Blackhawks D Brent Seabrook contributed a couple of assists and had the best possession stats for Chicago in Game Six, on for 17 shot attempts for and 11 against (60.7%) during 5-on-5 play. With Seabrook off the ice, the Blackhawks had 40.0% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Seabrooks 14 points in the playoffs ties Montreals P.K. Subban for second among defencemen. Kings D Drew Doughty is the top-scoring defenceman, with his goal and an assist Friday giving him 16 points in 20 playoff games. Doughty and partner Jake Muzzin were on for 65.7% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Doughty also set up Alec Martinez for the go-ahead goal, 2:06 after Doughty had scored to tie the game at two. Martinez also had a monster possession game, on the ice for 20 shot attempts for and nine against (69.0%) during 5-on-5 play, and leading the Kings with nine shot attempts in the game. Los Angeles controlled possession in Game Six, earning 57.3% of all shot attempts in the game, outshooting Chicago 29-25, and the Kings hold a slight possession edge in the series. Will that be enough to get them past the formidable Blackhawks in Game Seven? It could come down to goaltending, which is practically a cliche in playoff hockey, but neither Corey Crawford (.879 SV% in the series) nor Jonathan Quick (.886 SV% in the series) has been great. With one game to determine the fate of the series, whichever one returns to form could shift the balance. Darvish was examined Wednesday by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas. The right-hander will start a throwing program this weekend and wont need any injections. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says he expects Darvish will be put on the 15-day DL. The Rangers open Monday at home against Philadelphia. "I would think so, yes," Daniels said. "Thats kind of where its headed. Were looking at 10 days already. He will play catch Saturday and if he continues to improve, then well put a plan together from there." "Thats going to be two weeks. Hes not going to ready to break. Its a relief thats its positive news from the exam," he said. Darvish led the majors in strikeouts last year. With him out, Tanner Scheppers will start the season opener. Scheppers will be making his first big league start after 115 relief appearances. "Scheppers is making his first big league start on opening day," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Hes profiled as a No. 1 kind of guy. The innings he pitched last year were under a lot of pressure and I think he can handle the pressure that goes along with opening day." The Rangers said Nick Martinez will be their No. 5 starter to begin the season. He has pitched in just five games above Class A. Martin Perez will start the second game and Robbie Ross the third and Joe Saunders the fourth, giving the Rangers four left-handers to start the season. None of the five was in the Texas rotation to start last year. Martinez, a right-hander, was not even in the big league camp. He finished last season 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA with Double-A Frisco. He was 12-7 with a 2.50 ERA last year between Myrtle Beach and Frisco. "Martinez gives us an opportunity," Washington said. "He has the stuff to pitch at the major league level. I think its on us to make certain to keep him in the mental state that he needs to be in. I think he can go out there and hold that spot down until we get Colby (Lewis) and Harry ((Matt Harrison) back.dddddddddddd" Harrison, an 18-game winner in 2012, is rehabbing from a neck injury. Derek Holland will start the season on the DL because of knee surgery and Lewis is recovering from forearm and hip issues. "We, maybe not you, but we feel confident that we are going to be competitive and are going to win some ballgames," he said. The 23-year-old Martinez, 23, was an 18th-round pick in 2011 out of Fordham. "Weve had a number of injuries to our pitching staff," Daniels said. "Its obviously a little quicker than we anticipated with Nick. Given the injuries and looking at our options, we had the most confidence in Nick. There was an opportunity for someone to seize it." "As an organization, we feel Nicks the right guy for that opportunity," he said. "Nicks got three solid pitches, four really, plus command and has tremendous makeup. Hes an athlete, a shortstop-second baseman in college. Hes been durable. Hes smart. Hes poised. He attacks the strike zone." The Rangers made a series of roster moves. They signed right-hander Scott Baker, who was released by Seattle, to a Triple-A Round Rock contract. The 32-year-old Baker has a 63-48 record with a 4.14 ERA in 160 big league games. Texas claimed two players off waivers, getting infielder Donnie Murphy from the Cubs and right-hander Seth Rosin from the Dodgers. Rosin is a Rule 5 draft pick and must remain on the 25-man major league roster all season or be offered back to Philadelphia. Murphy can play second base, shortstop and third. The Rangers were in the market for a second baseman with Jurickson Profar out 10 to 12 weeks with a torn muscle in his right shoulder. The 31-year-old has played in 290 major league games in eight seasons with Kansas City, Oakland, Miami and the Chicago Cubs. He spent most of last season with Triple-A Iowa, hitting .265. The Rangers also released right-hander Tommy Hanson rather than guaranteeing his $500,000 salary, which would have increased to $2 million when the season started. Hanson was 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA in four exhibition games. NEW YORK -- Kyle Seager was so locked in Monday night he had no idea Derek Jeter nearly caught his short fly down the left-field line on a carom until he was safe on third with a triple. Seager had another triple, a home run and a double in a rare feat not seen in more than 40 years, leading Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners past the New York Yankees 10-2. "It was a weird play," Seager said of the triple in the fourth inning. "I basically just kept running." Hernandez (8-1) won his fifth straight start to match a career high. The Mariners broke open a game of odd bounces with a four-run seventh inning, and Seager hit a three-run drive in the ninth. Robinson Cano was again relentlessly booed by Yankees fans, this time in a makeup of a game washed out April 30. In the lineup after sitting four straight with a bruised left hand, he went 1 for 3 with two walks. The former New York second baseman drew a mocking cheer when he was caught too far off first by David Phelps (1-3). The durable Cano said he was a little scared at first returning from the injury. By the fourth time up, he was fine. "Hopefully we come tomorrow with no pain," said Cano, who had not missed four games in a season since 2006. Seattle, which won at Yankee Stadium on April 29 and May 1, took all three games in New York for the first time since sweeping three in 2002. The Mariners have won three straight overall. Seager became the first major leaguer to hit two triples and at least one homer and one double since Hal Breeden for Montreal in 1973, STATS said. The last AL player to do it was Hoot Evers for Detroit in 1950. "Thats definitely a special one," Seager said. "Thats definitely one Ill remember, for sure." His second triple was aided by a rare mental mistake by Jeter. Seager hit a blooper down the line that bounced off the glove of sliding left fielder Brett Gardner. Jeter was also giving chase and had a chance to make the catch off the deflection, but couldnt come up with it. With his back to third base umpire Brian Gorman, Jeter did not see the fair signal. When he corralled the ball in foul ground, he continued to jog several steps toward the corner. He looked surprised when he turned, and his throw to third was too late. Phelps hollered "throw the ball!" as Seager headed to third. After the play was over, Jeter could be seen on television saying "I thought it was foul" as he walked back to the infield. "Im in for the bunt and went back on the popup. It never crossed my mind that it was fair. I almost gave it to a fan," Jeter said. "I thought for sure the ball was foul because I was in foul territory." The Yankees missed Hernandez in April because of the rainout and they certainly wished they had not faced the Mariners ace Monday. King Felix has been on quite a roll. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner has not lost in nine starts dating to April 21. He was touched for two runs in the fourth when he kicked out his foot and redirected Ichiro Suzukis grounder up the middle for a two-run single. "Oh, my God," Hernandez said. "I should have not kicked that." Hernandez gave up eight hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck out eight without allowing a walk. Hernandez last won five starts in a row in 2009. Seager homered with two outs off Alfredo Aceves in the ninth three batters after Michael Saunders connected. Brad Miller had a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh to give Seattle a 4-2 lead and chase Phelps. Saunders added a two-run single off Matt Thornton. NOTES: Yankees RF Carlos Beltran (right elbow bone spurs) went 0 for 3 as the designated hitter in an extended spring training game against the Phillies in Clearwater, Florida. Beltran said elbow felt good. ... Yankees C Francisco Cervelli (right hamstring strain) went 1 for 2 with a double and walk in his third extended spring training game. ... The Mariners head next to Atlanta and will fly about 6,000 miles on this three-city road trip. ... Triple Crown hopeful California Chromes Jockey, Victor Espinoza, and Alan Sherman, the son of 77-year-old trainer Art Sherman and his top assistant, threw out ceremonial first pitches. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Tiger Woods doesnt sound too worried over matching his worst score in America on a course where he had won eight times. "I wouldnt read anything into what happened Saturday at Torrey Pines," Woods said Tuesday after an 18-hole exhibition for past winners of the Dubai Desert Classic. Woods was the defending champion at the Farmers Insurance Open when he sent seven straight holes making bogey or worse - including consecutive double bogeys for the first time in more than two years, on his way to a 79 as he missed the 54-hole cut. "It was just one of those days that happens, and it was one of the trains I just couldnt get off," said Woods, who was speaking for the first time since the third round in San Diego on Saturday. "There was nothing different with my ball-striking today (Tuesday) compared to last Saturday." Woods had three early birdies in the "Former Champions Challenge," but lost momentum and finished with a shot into the water for double bogey on the par-5 18th hole. He shot 71 and tied for eighth. Henrik Stenson, who won the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai last year, and Rafa Cabrera-Bello of Spain, each had 66. They tied for first and each earned $250,000. Rory McIlroy and Alvaro Quiros tied for third at 68. Woods said he spent Sunday at home in Florida working on his putting before heading to Dubai. He is a two-time champion of this event and has finished no worse than fifth all but one time in six appearances. That was in 2011, his worst year as a pro. "I went home and had a nice day off," Woods said. "Worked on putting a bit in the backyard and that was it. I am not that far off. Its just that I had one bad day, and that happens." Woods will play the opening two rounds with McIlroy and defending champion Stephen Gallacher. Woods played the Tuesday exhibition with Gallacher and Fred Couples. He said he hasnt played with Gallacher since the 1995 Walker Cup at Royal Porthcawl. Woods and John Harris defeated Gallacher and Gordon Sherry in a foursomes match. Woods and McIlroy also played together a year ago in Abu Dhabi, where both of them missed the cut. Woods was one shot inside the cut until being assessed a two-shot penalty for taking what he thought was a free drop from an embedded lie in a sandy area. McIlroy began his season two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi and finished one shot behind. He was penalized in the third round for not taking full relief from an area marked ground under repair. He took a selfie. When I came back the first time here in the locker room, I had all the big memories from last year, Wawrinka said Saturday, after cruising to his third straight sets victory with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over Jarkko Nieminen. I came to see my picture and to take a picture with me with myself over there.Thats the best feeling. To see my picture over there with all these amazing champions, said the 29-year-old Swiss, who has spent most of his career in the shadow of countryman Roger Federer.Wawrinka is the defending champion, but he does not want to dwell on it — even though he enters post-match news conferences in a bright red T-shirt provided by his sponsor that says Stan the Man.He remains today, as he was right after his victory, more subdued than overjoyed when he talks about winning his first Grand Slam title. He gives the impression of a man who does not want to jinx his success by talking about it.My focus is on the tournament this year. Im not thinking about last year, Wawrinka said. I had some amazing memories last year, for sure. But its really important to stay on whats happened today, and whats going to happen tomorrow. In a news conference earlier in the week, Wawrinka said his approach was to start at zero again, to try to wipe out thoughts that could prove distracting.ddddddddddddBut to briefly revisit the past, Wawrinkas triumph last year included beating the then three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and then No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal in the final, despite having never beaten either of them before. As a result, he rose to a career-high ranking of No. 3.This year, Wawrinka is ranked No. 4 and could meet Djokovic in the semifinals and face another final against Nadal, who has returned from injuries in a determined bid for the title.No. 6 Andy Murray, seeking his third Grand Slam trophy, is another possible opponent for the final. As the Australian Open heads into its second week, the spotlight remains riveted on the top players still in the draw. The surprise third-round loss of No. 2 Roger Federer means that only three of the so-called Big Four are still in contention. Some high-profile observers, like Serena Williams, say Wawrinka cannot be overlooked.Stan is playing well. Hes kind of flying under the radar, said Williams, who nonetheless says Murray is her favourite to win.Keeping a low-profile suits Wawrinka fine. For sure, Im not the focus. For me it doesnt matter, he said. Im feeling great. Im happy the way Im playing. To get to the second week again, its great. So far, everything is good for me.On Monday in the fourth round, Wawrinka has a score to settle against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who beat him in the first round of last years French Open. That was a tough loss, thats for sure, he said. It will be nice to play him again in a Grand Slam — here.
